My thanks to all who responded to my post. I've been out of town all weekend and will try to address all the comments received.

Keep in mind, I have been on Vonage since late 2005 and have experienced no problems until about 2 months ago. Something suddenly changed.

I've switched from Call Forwarding to SimulRing. Calls come through to my cell phone without delay. The delay on my home phone continues.

The Vonage device is connected to the phone wiring in my house. The delay is common to all phones, although keep in mind that all phones worked fine without delay about two months ago.

Brian188's comments on NAT traversal and ATA went over my head. However, I understand that I need to contact Vonage Tech Support. Am I correct that the NAT is something that goes on between the Cable Modem and the Vonage Adapter? If so, what would have made the problem appear suddenly after about two years of no problems?

Gordon

NAT refers to a technique used by many routers to "hide" internal addresses (of a home network for example) from the internet. It is also a technique used to allow multiple devices on your network to use/share one real address to the internet (it also has a side security benefit as it makes your PC or device's address invisible to the internet).

It is usually done by the router (or by a combination Vonage adapter and router such as the Linksys WRTP54G).

Your real internet address might be 67.x.x.x. (this is the address your ISP gives you and is a unique address on the internet. Your router might use NAT to share that address among 5 PC's in your home network and assign the PC's addresses 192.168.15.100 to 192.168.15.104

Sorry, was not tryng to confuse you or make things more difficult. What I was saying is basically your device is doing too many things all at one time. NAT Transversal, Echo cancellation, jitter buffer, etc. are all functions that your ATA is preforming, at one time.

A good analogy would be, it takes you 10 seconds to walk from the couch to the fridge. Now how long will it take you walk from the couch to the fridge, if you are juggling 5 bowling balls, your pants are around your ankles, and you are barefoot walking on broken glass?

So what support could do to help the situation is turn off some of those functions, as they are not always necessary.

I think the problem has been solved. I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Vonage tech support and they made some "adjustments" at their end and we rebooted the cable modem and Vonage adapter/router. I'm not sure what caused the problem to suddenly appear, but I'm happy that it is fixed.
