I have been w/Vonage for a couple of years now.
I basically never use my Vonage line anymore so I called to have the service terminated. After being on hold for about a half hour the Vonage rep told me that if I agreed to stay w/Vonage he would give me 2 months free, I told him NO please just terminate my service. The rep then tells me that in addition to the 2 months free offer he can lower my bill from 24.99 a month to 19.99 a month and again I tell him NO just please terminate my account. To make a long story short this back and forth routine continued for about 45minutes and eventually I had to go to work. I ended up being offered 2 months free service and a monthly bill of $4.99 (yes I said $4.99) If I stayed with Vonage. I accepted this offer (I wonder if they would have gone even lower?) begrudingly.
I really want to terminate my service and not spend another 1hour + doing it, does anyone have any suggestions???? |

Edit your billing info and change your credit card number to whatever, then they wont be able to charge you |

That probably won't work - there seems to be something in the TOS that allows Vonage to charge any credit card you've ever provided them.
redelt - I f you wanted to cancel, you should have stuck to your guns and not accepted the 4.99.
I just now cancelled the Vonage service I've had since January of 2005. I was on hold for 8 minutes, and a very nice woman (in some other country) made the same offers to me, but I just kept saying no, thank you, and she finally cancelled the service (I hope - I haven't received the confirmation yet). Total time on the phone - 14 minutes. I may have just been lucky, but I think patience and courtesy go a long way in these things. |

I was just successfully canceled my account today (after three weeks of trying). I searched blogs and found this very valuable direct number to vonage account management....the department you have to call to cancel your account. This is the last stop in the long line of transfers you have to endure when requesting an account cancel. The # is: 888-288-7435. They will ask why you want to cancel and try to sell you other services, etc, but if you are firm and persistent, they will cancel your account. I was placed on hold for a few minutes, but nothing like the 30min to an hour that I have experienced in the past when calling the regular #. Good luck! Hope this helps! |

I just cancelled another VOIP provider's service I was trying out, and it was easy to do:
I just told them I was moving soon, and wouldn't have access to a high speed internet connection for "awhile". They took that and cancelled without a fight. Gives them absolutely no grounds to try to keep your service running. Good luck. |

Their tactics to keep you a customer by refusing to cancel you or making it very very difficult or time consuming or expensive are deplorable. It cost me over an hour on the phone and $205 because I was only a customer for 4 months.
A friend told me he too was offered the $5/mo rate to stay. I wish they would have offered that to me, it would have been much cheaper than the $205 they charged instead!! |
