Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has gotten the SIP credentials for Vonage. You can run a sniffer to get the username and md5 password. The username should be 1+phone number. Something like "14085555555".
I am not sure about the password. You can run try and crack the password using MD5 softwares available.
Has anyone successfully done this?
Thanks |

Vonage box uses its MAC address for authentication. |

Hi Coolest,
The easy solution is to get a softphone from Vonage. You are then provided with the SIP username and password and can configure your own third party SIP client or even asterisk PBX.

My problem is that I don't want to take the Vonage box with me and a softphone would mean a new line.
I just want to easily take my phone with me when I travel, without having to take the vonage box with me. |

Download Vonage Talk, works like a softphone, but it is free. You can make unlimited calls to any North American number and receive calls using your Vonage number. |

One problem:
I have a Nokia E65 and it has the sip capabilities with WIFI. All I need is the username/password to use my vonage line via my cell phone. It would be really convenient.
I just don't get why they just don't provide it. They would be competing with cell phone companies then.
I am not very familiar with Vonage Talk. Is this something new from Vonage?
Why don't they just give me the credentials and make my life easy?

I've never understood what you'd want the softphone service for unless it's to use on your cell.... If you have to be at a computer to use it (as it's intended, that is), why pay when you can use something like Skype for free? Or for that matter, Vonage Talk itself! Am I missing something?
I too am wanting to use my Vonage service on my cell phone with wifi.... But I don't get how Vonage Talk would work for that. I can understand that it could work maybe to call other people on who are using a softphone of some sort, but what about land lines?
If you have any insight or have made this work, please help!
Thanks,

A soft phone works just like a regular phone except you use a head set or usb phone. You can call ANY number and also receive phone calls. You only have 500 free out going minutes.
Vonage Talk works like the Soft Phone, except I believe you can't make international calls. You can call any phone number in North America and also receive phone calls from around the world (these out going calls don't count against your minutes).
With Skype you can only make and receive calls to other Skype users, unless you using the paid service.
VT won't work on a cell phone, the original question was about the SIP credentials and that is why the soft phone was mentioned, and the VT application. Then it was mentioned that they have a cell phone with WI-FI. If you have a soft phone account they give you SIP credentials and then you can do what you want with them as mentioned. |

Thanks for clearing that up!!
...So basically the softphone is like paying for a package of 500 national minutes that work like the equivalent of Skype Out calls plus a free version of the equivalent of Skype in calls. So that's like 2 cents a minute on outgoing calls if you use all your minutes.
Hmm...well, thinking out loud here.... Skype Out calls to the US and lots of other places are about 2.5 to 3 cents a minute depending on the exchange rate, without having to buy them in a bundle. A SkypeIn line costs about $74 a year, which is about $6 a month. So depending on how much you actually use a Vonage softphone and whether you need the calling in number or not, maybe it's better for some people to use Skype. But then as you suggest Vonage Talk beats them both if you're not looking into using this on a a wifi cell like I am!
For the cell phone option, I just realized that if I get Skype Pro, because I live in Mexico, I can get a Skype In number for $30 a year ($2.50 a month) and for $3 a month I can get unlimited Skype Out calls to landlines, with no per minute charge but with a connection fee of 4.5 cents per call.
It would be SO lovely if I could just use my Vonage service on my cell if they gave out the SIP info, but I guess I'll have to find another option. I love Vonage...but maybe I'll have to switch to another VoIP provider that does give out the SIP info, or use the Skype Pro....*sigh*
Anyway, thanks again for your help! |
