PostPosted: Tue Nov 27, 2007 4:39 pm    Post subject: Connecting multiple outlets using OnQ and have second line Reply with quote Back to top

I'm not very technical and I want to hook up Vontage to ALL BUT one of my phone outlets. My main line is being replaced by Vonage. My second line is dedicated to fax/home office and alarm which is currently connected to one dedicated outlet in my office. This line is being kept with a traditional phone service.
I want to disconnect line 1 and use all of my other outlets to use my existing phones with Vonage. I want to plug in Vonage to one of my outlets and have it work with all of my outlets, except the dedicated outlet for line 2.
I know that I have to disconnect the blue wires at the NID, but I don't know what to do about keeping the connection to the rest of the house's outlets. I have OnQ to manage the connections and have two CAT-5 cables coming in to the Line In plugs. One cable is connecting only the orange/white wires to the line in(assuming this is line 2). The other cable has the other three colors and white wires connected to the line in(assuming this is line 1)... while its orange/white wires are connected to the other CAT-5 cable's blue and white wires(believe this has something to do with the alarm). I'm worried that I'm going to mess up my alarm set up.

In addition, I'm not running the Vonage box anywhere near the OnQ. The box will sit in an office and connect to the internet using my wireless router and phone will be plugged in to one of the outlets. Do I need to connect the Vonage router directly to the OnQ box?
Appreciate any help!!!

Kathleen, I was hesitant to respond since I don't know anything about the OnQ box or about your specific alarm setup, but I see you're not getting any action here. In general, if someone had a landline that he/she wanted to keep on just one outlet, using Vonage for all the others, I would suggest moving the land line to line 2 on the house wiring. To do that, you would disconnect line 1 (the blue/blue-white pair) from the landline at the NID, and connect the orange/orange-white pair to the landline instead. Then, at the one outlet where he wanted to use the landline, I would cross the pairs, making the blue/blue-white line 2 and the orange/orange-white line 1. That would make a single line telephone plugged into that jack work with the landline. Plug the Vonage box into any other jack and it would be available on all the others.

Handling the alarm complicates things. In a typical setup, a dedicated cable is run from the NID to the alarm box. The landline is connected only to a pair in the dedicated cable, and a second pair in the dedicated cable is a return from the alarm box. The second pair serves as the connecting point for the rest of the house wiring, connecting to the blue/blue-white pairs going to the rest of the house. In a setup like that, you would just do what I outlined above, connecting the orange/orange-white pair to the dedicated return in place of the blue/blue-white pairs.

That's as far as I can go (maybe a bit further!) without understanding your setup a lot better. I hope it gives you some clues.
