Hello all,
I have Vonage using a Linksys PAP2 unit (version 1). I cannot access the settings screen using the IP address of the unit.
I used the voice response menu to turn off DHCP, set a static IP address, and set the subnet mask and gateway. The phone works fine, but I would like to get to the setup screen using a web browser. When I try to go to the IP address in a web browser (using FireFox and Safari on OS X 10.5 Leopard), I get this message:
What can I do? My ultimate goal is to update the firmware, which I believe is old. Also, I'd just like to manage it using the web interface instead of the voice response from now on.
Thanks! |

The firmware for the PAP2 is automatically updated by Vonage and requires NO user input to accomplish this.
Are you sure you have the right ip address for the PAP2? From your phone dial: **** (four asterisks) then dial: 110 #
You should be told the IP address of your device. |

Hi Darrell_G,
I did not know that the firmware is updated automatically. Thanks!
Yes, the IP address you see in the screenshot is a static IP address that I assigned using the voice prompts. When I check it using **** 110, it repeats that IP back to me, so I am pretty sure it's right. |

Have you ever been able to access the login screen of your PAP2 via the web? Try logging in to your router and see what address it assigned the PAP2. |

No, I've never been able to log in. That is, I've never tried. When I first got it, I plugged it in, and it worked, so I haven't thought about it since.
The router is not assigning an IP to the PAP2. I assign them manually. All of the machines in my house (computers, TiVos, the PAP2) have static IPs. I prefer to maintain them manually. |

If the PAP2 is web addressable, you should be able to login to the device via the web. I don't know why you are unable to. You may want to contact Vonage Tech support if no one on the forum can help you...I'm clueless. |

Actually, once the PAP2 makes its first connection to the Vonage servers and the firmware is updated by their system, it disables the web user interface; the "unreachable" message you get in the browser is normal behavior for a functioning PAP2 once it is working with Vonage. That is behavior that Vonage wants. Vonage's position is that full, standard configuration is done through the phone handset, and, since the PAP2 is ONLY a phone adapter and not a router, no advanced configuration is needed and there is no reason for the web interface to remain enabled, thereby tempting users to either try to hack things Vonage doesn't want hacked or to tinker with settings that might cause problems for less experienced users.
To demonstrate -- you can do a factory reset of the PAP2 and, before it starts talking to Vonage, the default IP address will work and you can get to the user interface, but, again, as soon as it talks to Vonage, that interface will be disabled. |

Well that answers that. Thanks!
My main concern was controlling the IP address and stuff like that, and since I was able to do that with the voice response menus, I am happy.
Thanks again! |

Linksys PAPs have two versions. The first version is not accessable via the web interface, only through the phone it self. Version 2 is accessable through the web interface and through the telephone.
In case you ever want to totally reset the PAP back to factory settings, dial **** then 877778# then 1 and hang up (or it is 788887# - I forget-oops). This will remove all extra settings. Of course this will set it back to dyanmic IP address as well.
