PostPosted: Sun Nov 18, 2007 6:09 am    Post subject: Having 2 adapters for the same number?! Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

I'm new at this and need some help. I'm using Vonage and is going overseas to Sweden for awhile. My question is: can I leave my Vonage adapter at the house in NY, buy another Vonage adapter and bring with me to Sweden and configure it there for use with my Vonage NY number? Is this what is possible through my online account under thes "move my number" option?

Thank you.

No, you can't have two adapters active at the same time with the same number. Yes, it is possible to move your Vonage number to another device through your online account. Once you move your number to the new device, the old adapter is no longer active until you move the number back to the device.

If you will be traveling with a laptop computer, what you can do is leave your current setup as is and download and install Vonage Talk to your laptop computer. Vonage Talk will allow you to receive incoming and make outgoing calls from the convenience of your laptop computer that has internet access; all you need is a headset and microphone. Being that you're going to Sweden, you will not be able to make outgoing international calls, you can receive them though. Vonage Talk is in alpha testing and and international calling will be added at some point in the future. I use Vonage Talk on a daily basis and the call quality is excellent. Here's the link to Vonage Talk: http://alpha.vonage.com if clicking on the link doesn't work, type the address into your web browser.

I really don't want the Vonage Talk, I want to be able to use my NY number to recieve and make calls, but from your reply it should work to bring another Vonage device with me to Sweden.
How would I set up with a wireless router though because I will have a laptop with me. In what order do I set up the Vonage adapter, the wireless router and the cable modem?

You can use your NY number with Vonage talk. Once you start up Vonage Talk all you calls will ring both your home phone and Vonage Talk and you can call any North American number.

I am not sure how you connect your Vonage adapter with a wi-fi connection, I was thinking about that also, but now with Vonage talk I won't ever take my adapter on the road.

If you do plan on buying another adapter, your Vonage line back in NY won't work, that is why VT is a great option.

So if I would choose Vonage Talk would that work as a call forwarding sing you say it would ring both at my house and on my computer? Also with Vonage talk, is it possible to use a phone plugged into the computer instead of using headset?

you can't plug in a regular phone, I use a USB phone, but have to dial from the Vonage talk application.

When my Vonage phone rings and I have Vonage talk open, both of them ring and I can decide which one I want to answer. The call quality is great, but it depends on your internet provider, in a hotel using wi-fi might not be the fastest connection and not always free.

If you don't want to use Vonage Talk, why don't you just take your current Vonage adapter with you to Sweden? Which Vonage adapter do you have ? There's really no need for a second device unless you just want one.

Now, i installed it to my other computer and it worked there as well, however now it doesn't work on my laptop! Everytime i log in to Vonage talk on the laptop it says calling unavailable, what is up with that? No, i am not logged in at the same time with Vonage talk.

Sign out of Vonage Talk and exit the program. Restart your computer and then sign back in to Vonage Talk. Make sure you're signed in to Vonage Talk on only one computer at a time.
