Jitter, the most easy explanation is the difference between the fastest packet and the slowest packet. You basically would like for them to be able to be within 25ms of each other.

Thanks for the info on the dlink - Comcast microcode. I did try to do the upgrade and get an error trying to open port 23 on the modem. I shall see what d-link has to say about that. I have an old Docsis 1.0 modem, and may move back to it this weekend. Will see what the demand on the internet/phone line is before I start.
I talked to a Vonage tech (I asked him if he was level 2 and he said "I'm as high as we get, seeming confused on how I got him as my 1st human) for a long time on Wed (or who knows maybe it was t'giving). I asked him to adjust my jitter. He told me that it was set to 2 and changing it to 1 or 3 wouldn't have much effect. He was very patient with me and I asked him for suggestions. He sent me to DSLreports.com and suggested I begin to document some of what I can find out about Comcast. I specifically asked about upgrading my Linksys box to the newer Motorola, because of the voice traffic queing, and he said that it would make no difference.
After about 90 minutes on the phone with him, I called someone else, and they couldn't hear me.
Harumph!
Happy T'giving weekend to all.

I have now upgraded my D-link 202 modem (docsys 2.0[?])to the Comcast microcode (rev 2.0.1) and over 3 days had no issues. Of course internet traffic hasn't been too heavy over the post Thanksgiving weekend, so the jury is still out.
In the course of exploring the modem, I notice that my modem prom shows it's capabilities as just slightly less than what Speedtest shows Comcast delivers on both upload and download. So I asked some friends and neighbors (Comcast & Vonage customers, 2 miles and 4 miles away) to run speedtest and let me know the results. Where I have 7.5mb download and 360kb upload they have 13mb download and 1500kb upload. Wow! One has a year old Motorola modem and the other has a 6 month old Linksys modem. Both were told by Vonage to get new modems.
What is the relationship between speed and Docsys level? Would a new modem affect my Comcast throughput?

Have your friend bring the Motorola modem to your house and check the speed then.

Vonage requires Docsis 1.2, but recommends 2.0. Theoretically throughput is the same, but the width of frequencies used is much greater with 2.0.

Actually I would recommend picking up a Motorola modem if you friends modem tests with higher speeds at your house. You can pick one up at Circuit City or Best Buy for 80 - 90 bucks or less if on sale.

I think that you have solved all your problems. Wish I had gotten back to your post a few days ago! You stated a few posts back that you had an older modem with docsis version 1.0 - That was probably the whole problem. If you do a google search or even go to the Vonage site and do a search for docsis - you will find several explinations to your choppy audio. The 1.0 version just was not designed to handle the constant steady stream of packets needed to use internet phones. It is good that it worked for so long, but it just wasn't good enough. Now that you have a 2.0 docsis and your internet speeds are sufficient, you should have no more audio problems.
