We've had Vonage for about 2 years now, works nicely since you can call everywhere. However having 2 routers seems to be causing frequent shortages/blank areas of wireless and it's been a extremely troublesome.

Does the Motorola VT2542 work reliably & strong? Is there an access fee of 29.99? How does it compare to other routers on the market? Debating whether to buy a D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit ROuter Dir655 or a Linksys WRT54GS, both seem very good in their class. Right now for some reason the Vonage tech assembled:

Cable > Vonage 300RTP (Bad) > Wireless Router, I believe it seems quite efficient to have 2 routers. Should I setup:

Cable > Wireless Router > Vonage 300RTP / PC Wired?

Thanks, these internet issues are driving the family absolutely mad.

The only issue I "had" with the VT2542 was after a loss of power or a reboot of the device all settings on the device would default to it's original settings. Meaning any settings that I configured on the device, including security, were lost. I NO longer have this issue after a reboot or loss of power...All user settings that I configured on the device are retained after a reboot or loss of power.

The reason I chose the VT2542 is because I wanted as few devices as possible. The VT2542 works very well for me combining wireless router features along with being a phone adapter. And I might add the phone quality is excellent.

You stated you are experiencing "frequent shortages/blank areas of wireless". Would you by any chance happen to be using a 2.4ghz cordless phone. This would explain everything as they would be operating on the same frequency, thus kicking the wireless off.

If this is the case, simply switch to a 5.8ghz cordless.

Many thanks for the replies. We've only noticed problems with the internet, I'm guessing it's the Zyxel Wireless router dying. I'll check on the gigahertz, but I doubt that's interferring with the unreachable areas.

If I go with the VT2542, is there an activation fee, or is it a simple $60 and straight connection. How does it rank against other fast routers?

There is no activation fee. Are there better routers than the VT2542, sure there are. If you're looking for a wireless all-in-one, the VT2542 would be my choice.

Thanks for the info, since the family loves Vonage so much I think the VT2542 is going to be the most reliable and effective, otherwise I'd order the DIR655. Wat's the chance Vonage will replace the RTP300 they gave me? I've heard it works if you threaten to leave the service.

If you want a more robust router, by all means go with the DLink Dir-655 and simply add the Vonage PAP2 phone adapter. The PAP2 is a compact device that takes up very little space. If you want the all-in-one router/phone adapter combo, then go with the VT2542.

I've heard current customers of Vonage sometimes have a very difficult time with trying to purchase the VT2542 as a replacement let alone trying to get it for free as a replacement device, so I guess it all depends on who you speak with at Vonage if threatening to cancel the service will work.

I have the DLink DIR-655 with the DLink VTA and it works like a charm. The router is quite fast and I've never had an issue. It has built in QoS that works well with a bit of tweaking. The DLink VTA is still available at retail stores so it's a good alternative if you don't mind forking out the $49.99!

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the info everybody.

Will check the house for the 2.8 ghz issues. Otherwise the VT2542, as reported by a few users, will be the choice considering it's no hassle to setup connections & configurations. Since I'm out of the house often I'll leave buying a brand new DIR655 & the DLink DVR or Vonage PAP2.
