1. Your location: Hemet, CA (951 area code)
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Time Warner Roadrunner level 2
3. Upload and download speeds 6MB down / 512 up
4. Modem make and model / Ambit U10C018
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 - MOTOROLA VT2542
6. Setup of Network ie Modem----> Modem VT2542 lan connected desktop

Download speed 1481 Kbps (socket test)
Upload speed 492 Kbps (socket test)
Quality of service 95 %
Maximum pause 90 ms
Round trip time 91 ms
Upstream jitter 2.9 ms
Upstream packet loss 0 %
Upstream packet order 100 %
Upstream discards 0 %
Downstream jitter 8.7 ms

Downstream packet order 100 %

I am REALLY hoping someone can help me out, I have a FTP server running a SSL connection for transfers to and from my office. Digital art and CAD files, some are huge.

Anytime there is a upstream transfer going on, the Vonage just dies..

I thought the VT2542 had QOS built in to prioritize voice packets but it just does not seem to be working.

Anyone have any ideas? If there are any uploads going on at all, the Vonage is worthless. I have even lowered the call quality to the middle setting in the bandwith saver and throttled uploads back to 25Kbs on the server, still hopeless if there is a transfer going on.

I really hope there is a solution or it is back to version for me!

The Motorola VT2542 does prioritze voice packets over file transfers. I've never had a problem with voice quality while downloading and or uploading files simultaneously while on the phone. Is your cable modem connected by usb or ethernet? Ethernet would be the preferred connection.

Your upload speed is not at issue...there's more than enough so that your call quality should not suffer while uploading files. When you're not uploading files, how's the call quality? Is there anything else going on within your network that could be causing the problem?

There is nothing else going on on the network, not even internet activity.
When I download a file from my office my wife says people say they are only hearing every other word she says but she can here them fine. as soon as the transfer is over, the phone works fine.
This is really driving me nuts!! Any ideas would be great. I had a Vonage tech flash to the newest version of the bios in hopes that it would fix the lose settings issue if you loose power.

I have been having this problem since we got it and have tried everything I could find on the web

Is this your first Vonage device? Was your cable modem supplied by TW or did you purchase it? It could be either your Vonage device may be defective or the cable modem. Do you have a friend or neighbor that would allow you to test your Vonage device with their connection?

If you have no other place you can go to test your device, I would first look at replacing your rented cable modem from TW and purchasing your own cable modem. The Motorola SB5101 along with the Linksys cable modem are considered to be excellent modems. You should be able to find one at your local Circuit City or Best Buy stores. If the problem persists, I would then look at asking for a new VT2542.

Are you sure that the 2542 should be able to manage the upstream traffic good enough to maintain call quality? I read someplace there is a hidden QoS rule in the 2542 to prioritize the voice packets, I can't find any other settings except to create new QoS rules, it looks like the rules would apply to computers connected to the network, not the voice packets going out of the router

I want to be sure before I start blindly throwing money at this, I would rather go back to verizon if I can't solve it for sure.

Thanks!
Marty

Yes, I'm sure the VT2542 should be able to manage and prioritize your bandwidth so that your call quality is not affected in a negative way when you're downloading or uploading files. The VT2542 automatically prioritizes voice packets...there is no setting you need to change to accomplish this. When you login to your device, on the Advanced tab/IP QoS, you can add additional traffic rules. Also on the "Help" tab, there is a help section for IP QoS.

It's really up to you as for trying a new modem...that's why I suggested to first try someone else's cable connection if possible.
