I ran the test again tonight and got some interesting results..
a QoS of 48%, when tested before it was at 95%....... I do have the delay when getting a dial tone in addition to the uploading issue, it also takes a while for a call to go through and sometimes we have to say hello 2 or three times on a incoming call before we can be heard.

The delay in getting a dial tone and having to repeat yourself on incoming calls is not normal...This sounds more like a Vonage related issue. Have you contacted Vonage tech support about this issue? Hold off on the purchase of a new modem until Vonage tries to correct this problem...it may be interrelated with your other issue.

For testing purposes, remove all your networking equipment and connect your cable modem directly to your PC. Rerun the Voip test and post your results. In addition to the speed test on this site, also try http://testyourvoip.com and http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/ for comparative testing. You will have to type the links or copy and paste the links into your web browser.

If you are only having issue when you upload a large file, then try setting bandwidth on Vonage to "normal" setting. If you still have issues after that then call Vonage and have them adjust your jitter and packets. They can also adjust your RTP ports. That may help you with your audio issues.

The delay to dial tone happens without any upload, we have been able to live with that, the main issue was not being able to talk while an upload was taking place. I changed the bandwith setting from high quality to normal quite some time ago, no real impact on the issue we are having. I even tried throttling the FTP upload down to 45kbs then to 35 kbs and finally 25Kbs, still had issues

I will give them a call tonight and see how it goes

Had my wife call today and tell them about the delay to dial tone, they made some changes and she said the dial tone delay is much better now, will try to upload a file in the AM and see how it works

Okay, my wife called inhouse tech support today and told them about the delay to dial tone and the delay on answering a call, they, made some changes and the dial tone delay seems to be better for now. BUT when I got home, i called up someone as a test and started a upload to my work FTP and the caller on the other end could no longer hear me. I stopped the transfer and the call cleared up.......

This is really frustrating....

I was using the VT2542 and had the same problem with delayed dial tone. It seemed at times it would take 4 seconds before I would get dial tone. I moved my service over to an old PAP2 device and dial tone is there instantly every time. Perhaps when they fix the firmware in the 2542 they will fix the dial tone delay.

Are you using a corded or cordless phone system? Do you have Vonage setup to use the home wiring in your home? If you can, take a corded phone and plug it directly into phone port 1 of the VT2542 and check to see if you get a dial tone instantly.

MartyEvans,

I had the same problems as you. The VT2542 could not handle the load. My situation was worse because I was running a SlingBox (The SlingBox will suck up all upload bw avaliable!). The way I resolved it was to pick up a WRT54GL router. Flash that with a 3rd party firmware(Tomato) so I could setup proper QOS settings. This has worked flawlessly.

If you have a local place to buy the WRTGL router to try it out so that if it doesn't work you can return the router.
