"*99 temporarily disables Bandwidth Saver as well as temporarily changes the packetization from the default of 20 to 10 as well as codec G.711" http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic904.html
as far as "I know that the Voip codecs are designed to transmit fax calls reasonably well but they don't do well for modem calls" how/where do you know that, and why does Voip bother with t.38 if it's the case? |

I know it experientially. Without *99, using the maximum quality bandwidth setting, I can't get v.90 connections and one of my modems won't connect at all. With *99, I can get 33.6Kbps in both directions calling my landline and I can get approximately 44Kbps when calling my ISP. |

ok, well, my main question is the first part, about Voip codecs being designed for faxing. |

I guess the fax modem in a computer works differently than the modem in a standalone fax machine.. I didn't realize that they were so far apart.

Hmm... I have the RTP300, and the current (as well as all) firmware version doesn't support *99 and I get V.90 connects all the time on my dial-up modem. 50k-53k usually. Same with faxes, getting 33600 connects most of the time. Now that fax machines support 33.6k, they're quite speedy, which is a shame since .PDFs are pretty much going to kill them off.
I should note that the Vonage adapter *does* make a difference here. The older PAP2/RT31P2 have much noisier audio circuitry in them than the newer RTP300/WRTP54G adapters do. The Motorola VT1005 & Cisco ATA186 also seemed to fare well with data/fax. |
