PostPosted: Mon Nov 05, 2007 7:16 am    Post subject: OSX Internet Sharing connection? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a unique situation. I am stuck at a remote post overseas and want to connect my Vonage system to connect with my daughter in the USA.

I can only connect to the internet via my Mac's Airport connection. I do NOT have a router, and I can not get one for a while. My Internet connection is very good, and on 24/7. My computer is also on 24/7.

Can I use OSX's Internet Sharing (the airport connection to my ethernet) and connect an ethernet cable from the Mac to the Vonage router?

I tried this:

1. Turn on Internet Sharing. Set to share from airport to Ethernet.
2. Turned off Firewall.
3. Connected ethernet cable to the vonage's router's blue WAN connection. Got a green light on the back.
4. Got a blinking yelow light on the front of Vonage router. It never turns green.

When I connect another Mac to the same Ethernet cable, they get good internet service - so I know that part is working.

My Vonage router is a Vtech 5.8 broadband phone.

If you have a solution, please explain in step by step detail, as I have limited Internet connection / TCP / IP knowledge.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Just refreshing this to see if anyone has even the slightest idea of how this can be done. I am ready to cancel my Vonage account as I still can't get this to work. Sad

I think what you are trying to say is that you have the airport connected to an ethernet cable, and your mac connected wirelessly with another computer attached to it to do internet sharing. A Vonage device won't work this way. I know you said that you don't have a router - the Vonage device IS a router. Connect your ethernet cable to the blue port WAN on the Vonage, connect the airport to the yellow port (LAN). Powercycle in order and you should be good to go!

Not quite.

I have my Mac sitting on my desk, and it connects to the Internet via wireless Internet through my internal Airport card. I do not have a hard wired Internet service. The compound I live at in broadcasts the internet to all users via a wireless Lan.

I have the Vonage router sitting on my desk.

I want to turn on Internet Sharing to go out through my Ethernet port. Then connect the Vonage router to this shared Internet ethernet cable.

Will this work?

I heard of a PC guy who did this when staying at a motel that had wireless Internet service. He turned on internet sharing, and then connected his Vonage router to his PC. It worked - he claims. But I have not been able to do this on my Mac with OSX.

This is a pretty specific problem that you may not find help for here.

I would try a Mac forum and ask generically how to get ICS sharing to work with a router as you describe it and see what people say. I only mention to say router (and not Vonage) so that people don't get hung up on that it is a Vonage device. If you can get the router functions to work, Vonage service should also work.

They will probably be better suited to help you with this since what you need are the Mac specific settings to get this to work properly.

The other option would be to use a V-Phone since this works just through your PC.

What is odd is that if I remove the Ethernet wire from the back of the Vonage Router and stick it in a PC, the other other computer connects to the internet fine. I just do not know why the router can't see it Sad

This should definitely be possible. I've shared my internet connection from my Mac with all manner of computers connected over ethernet. I think the first thing to try is to see if you can 'see' the Vonage router from your Mac. I'm not familiar with the model of router you have, but you should be able to open its configuration page in a web browser by entering its IP address. I glanced at the equipment help page on the Vonage site, but didn't see the model you referred to. Let me know more info about your router model so I can help more.

If you need to see if the mac "sees" the router, the IP address is 192.168.15.1

I would suggest if you were to make a phone call to contact mac first but don't tell them you are trying to connect Vonage - they would probably instantly say "we don't support this". Just tell them that you have a router you are trying to connect that isn't registering.

I can only "see" the router if I connect the ethernet cable to the PC/LAn connection of course, and then turn off Internet sharing.

If, however, I share the net from my Mac, but connect ANOTHER Mac to the Vonage Router PC/LAN port, then yes, that other Mac can of course see the Vonage router, but not the Internet.

Need to end this thread - I got it working finaly!

I connected to the internet via wireless Airport as usual.
I turned on Internet Sharing and shared via the ethernet.
I then attached a cheap router to the ethernet cable.
Turned on the router, and it saw the internet fine.
Then I connected a cable from the router to the Vonage.
Works like a charm!
