Is it possible to directly call my RT31P2 router and not go through the Vonage Gateway? I'm thinking of using a program like NetMeeting, where I can type in my IP address and call home. This would be convenient for me and save on bandwidth for Vonage by not having this call go through their system. |

I think the unit is locked from receiving calls directly, but Vonage provides you the necessary tools to make a free call to a phone that's "under your control." I've occasionally used Click-2-Call to place a call to call my family at home, from college.
Just start up Click-2-Call, put in your user/pass, and type in the phone number for where you are. The phone at home will ring, and when they pick it up, your phone will ring. The call will be completed just as if they had called you. |

That sounds great, but most public pay phones don't accept incoming calls. I was hoping to be able to use my labtop in a Hotspot and call home that way. |

FWD works great with most Voip providers and its free. They have multiple softphones and a lot of people like Xlite softphone. The free softphone on FWD's website though supports g.723 as well as g.711 and should work ok with dialup. I've heard some people say Vonage doesn't support that codec but with my SPA-3000 configured with FWD I have got it to use many codecs Vonage doesn't support through normal calls. I'm not sure how well softphones can do this though. But try them out... they are great to have with a Voip provider. From a FWD number just dial **2431(vonage number) to connect. Vonage to FWD hasn't been working for me though. |
