I have an unsecured wireless connection from my neighbor that I would like to use my vonage router (WRTP54G) with. I noticed in postings that I could upgrade the firmware of a WRT54G to act as a client using sveasoft firmware, but apparently this firmware is not compatible with the WRTP54G. Is there anyway I can use the vonage router with a wireless connection and not a hardwired connection? I do have a WAP54g access point, but have not been able to make this work with the vonage router either. With the WAP54g I understand I can only connect to another WAP54g when in client mode and this is not what my neighbor is using. I am also using a WRE54G range expander to enhance my neighbors signal. Any ideas? |

I don't believe the WRTP54G can be made to do what you want to do. |

you could try using a wireless ethernet bridge, such as the "Linksys WET54G Wireless-G Ethernet Bridge"
as it sounds, it picks off the wireless signal and converts it for use with an ethernet connection. i'm not convinced this would work well with vonage, especially if the network you're tapping into is at the slower 802.11B standard. also that network could be slow DSL. personally i tried using vonage with the cheap verizon DSL and it was horrible. try some internet speed test with your computer before you go about buying a bridge.
i had the same quandary a few years back and ended up talking to my downstairs neighbor about tapping into his router with a long ethernet cable. about 75' of ethernet run out his window, over the roof and into my window later, it worked beautifully. he never asked for money but i gave him bills anyway when i saw him. what a super nice guy, huh?! |
