what I don't understand is, what patents did Vonage infringe on and how come there are other VOIP companies out there still in business without being sued. |

oooh, you said vonage have a few surprises in the next year, I hope one of those is that you can supply naked DSL/Dry Loop to UK customers, that would give British Telecom a kick up its useless ass, and allow me to get rid of my poxy BT line that I have to pay £11 extra for each month as its the only was to get DSL and VOIP in my area as we are not in a fibre cabled area. |

Vonage doesn't supply naked DSL here in North America, we still have to pay for naked DSL here in Canada about $10 a month. |

The patents that Vonage infringed are dubious at best. Vonage really thought that the patents were invalid (as do I) and that they would prevail.
I tried to link some articles here and I can't get links to work. Google up patents, Vonage and then each of these companies. You'll find some very deep discussions on the topic.
When I read up on all of this stuff I really got that old feeling of "damn, someone patented breathing", but I am not a lawyer. Verizon and Sprint were the big 2 in this mess and Vonage settled with both including a license to use patents without ongoing royalty payments.
AT&T is the runt of this litter and I don't think that there is as much concern over this one. |
