PostPosted: Fri Oct 26, 2007 3:53 am    Post subject: poor call quality when streaming video Reply with quote Back to top

I have had service with Vonage for about 3 days. I have been testing out the connection for call quality. I haven't found any until now. It seems as though the call quality gets choppy and poor when I start streaming video (ex. YouTube). My guess is that the traffic is congesting my router. When I download a 329MB file of the internet the call quality is fine and I can hear the calls clear. But when I watch a video it gets very choppy. I tested it to see if it was my router by connecting my phone adapter (Moto VT2442) directly to the modem...no luck. I really want to get this problem fixed. Here is my current set up...

1. Internet (3000kbps/512kbps) to
2. Modem to
3. Moto VT2442 Adapter to
4. Router (Linksys WRT54G) to
5. Computers on Network

That is the path that the data follows. I have disabled the Firewall on the WRT54G. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on.

I would look here for some recommendations on a better setup.

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/ - A frequent contributor to this forum.

I don't know your Vonage device, but generally most people put the main router first and then connect their Vonage router to that along with other PCs, etc.

The point of doing this is so that the first router can be setup with QoS which will give your Voip traffic higher priority than video or downloads, etc.

Also many in here for the main router use a WRT54GL which allows 3rd party firmware to be loaded on it. People use firmware like Tomato and DD-WRT because they have very good setups for QoS.

Tomato Link - http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
Wiki Book for Tomato - http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_Firmware
DD-WRT - http://www.dd-wrt.com

As you can see from my signature I use Tomato. I think it gives great options and is really easy to use.

Hope this helps, but just keep in mind that your problem is setting up QoS on whatever router/firmware you use.

I have very similar setup:
1. Internet (8000/512)
2. Linksys WRT54G v2 running Tomato 1.10 to #3 and #4
3. Motorola VT2442 to phones
4. Computers

It took some work to configure tomato for QoS perfectly (after trying VT2442 in front, and trying the Linksys in front with Cisco firmware). I'll be happy to share my setup, but you need to have the right version of WRT54G.

What's the firmware version of your WRT54G?

You have to remember that streaming videos require a lot of bandwidth. An easy remedy to this is to lower the bandwidth that your Vonage device uses to "normal". You can do this from within your web account. If you are still having issues, then simply call them and ask the technician to change what they call your "jitter buffer". This way, if the Voip packets are delayed they can still catch them.
