Hey all,

It's probably already too late, because I already ordered the service, but I was wondering if these numbers are high enough to support Vonage, particularly if it will be slowing my internet...

1. location: Philadelphia
2. Cable modem
3. download: 214,576
upload: 265,816
4. modem: motorola, SB5101

Results of Voip test:

Wanted to know if the Vonage service would be slowing down my internet and if there's anything I can do to help it if it does.

Your speeds are good enough to support Vonage, but I would expect some slowdown in internet service when you're using the phone.

I'm more concerned about your max pause, turn around time, and jitter. I'm very concerned about the packet loss, you to server. Something bad is going on there.

Also when you did this test is the computer connected directly to the cable modem or are you running it on the wi-fi network?

I noticed big difference in speed test from directly connected and from my laptop running wireless.

Thanks for the replies,

My computer was on the wi-fi network, not directly hooked up to the modem. I also see very different speeds between the two, but I don't think it matters too much because we use the computers exclusively through the wireless.

Steve - any chance you can explain that? Is there anything I could do to fix those things or it a problem with the provider?

Roscopco has put you on the right track. Temporarily connect a computer directly to the modem and re-run the test. If that gives better results, and assuming that the Vonage box will be hard wired and not wireless, then you shouldn't have problems. If the results don't improve, then you may.

One way to make sure that your internet is "good enough", and if not get it fixed before you start using Voip is to

1. connect a computer direct to the modem.
2. click on START and then RUN
3. in the box type CMD and click OK
4. on the black screen type: ping yahoo.com -n 50

This will start a ping test from you to yahoo and then back again sort of like a ping-pong game.

When the test is complete, about 4 lines from the bottom you should see "packets sent = 50" then you will see packets received. If you lost over 2% you are having an issue with the ISP and need to contact them.

Two lines below that you will see min and max and avg. This is the minimum, maximum, and average round trip time. Both numbers should ideally be under 100 (a number of up to 150 could probably be caught by Vonage with changes to your adapter's settings). Anything over that would be latency and you would have to call ISP. These numbers should also be within 25 of each other or you are dealing with jitter. Again, you would have to call your ISP.

In summary -
* no more than 2% packet loss
* a latency of under 100
* min and max should be within 25 of each other

When you connect your computer directly to the modem you may have to reboot the modem - just a heads up...
