Looking for a little advice here....I recently switched from TimeWarner broadband to Clearwire wireless for my ISP. I'm in the trial period with Clearwire right now, so I'm not sold on it. I'm a cheapskate, so I signed up for the $30/mo package, which gives me 786kbps. I wasn't getting that great of up/down speeds with TimeWarner so I figured "Why not? Go with the cheap package." I've recently recovered from the defective firmware upgrades Vonage pushed out. I was able to do so by pressing the reset button on my Vonage router resetting my router to factory defaults (among other things...it's a long story). And now, I don't know if the poor up/down speeds (~70 - 90kbps) are due to my router settings or the new (slower) ISP. Let's say it's the router, and resetting it to factory defaults screwed me up. Any suggestions on how to address this problem? OR.....if it's Clearwire, then, well, I guess I'm switching back to TimeWarner. Or maybe not. Currently my setup is cable from the wall to the wireless modem (or cable modem, depending on which one I'm trying), then to the WRPT54G, and then to the computer. Would installing a regular router fix things? So my PC doesn't have to touch the WRPT54G? Obviously, I'm not a networking wiz. Thanks for the advice and opinions.
Cheers. |

I highly doubt that it's the WRTP54G that's causing the slow download and upload speeds. But to know for certain, remove the WRTP54G from the loop, run a speed test and then you'll know for sure. |

Good idea. That worked. I disconnected the WRPT54G, and I get great up/down speeds. So it IS my WRPT54G. How do I fix this? I've got firmware v1.00.62, and it's all set the factory defaults, with the wireless disables for now. Thanks. |

"How do you fix it?" Good question...I really don't know. Is the wireless modem from Clearwire or are you using a cable modem? For testing purposes, remove the clearwire wireless modem and reconnect the WRTP54G to your cable modem and run a speed test. |

I've narrowed down the problem to the WRPT54G router. Having zero experience configuring this thing for optimun performance, I'm looking for some tips on improving its throughput.
I'm also toying with the idea of putting in a standard 4 port 10/100 router so my PC doesn't have to touch the WRPT54G router. In theory, this should fix my problem. But I sure would like to tweak my WRPT54G so I don't have to but any new hardware. |

connect your Vonage to the clearwire modem.wireless internet do not work that good with vonage..but here is the thing.when you connect Vonage to your clearwire.give clearwire a call.tell them that you want to open the SIP ports on their part.i think they will do that on your modem.its 5060-5061 SIP protocol, and 10000-20000 RTP. |

Wish I knew that before. I cancelled the ClearWire service and stayed with TimeWarner. Whenever Clearwire gets Voip service in my area, I'll be switching to Clearwire again. I can't stand Vonage. I hate their customer service, or lack thereof. Thanks anyway. |

Folks, I just went to several hours of testing my new WRT54, let me confirm that router is bad. I finally hooked another router in front of it and my download speed went from 250 kb/s to 5050 kb/s.
The phone part and the wireless part works fine, it's the ethernet ports that are messed up.
I did not want to go through another routher set up with Vonage so I had to a solution myself.
I actually did not have to buy another router, I used a Netgear Powerline Adapter that had four ethernet connections.
