I am a Comcast Broadband subscriber. My setup is as follows:
My Motorola VT1000 sits between my Surfboard Cable Modem and my D-Link D-624 Router. I can enter the setup of the VT1000 and see that I have a WAN IP address listed, and I have verified this through whatismyip.com. However, I cannot ping the WAN IP address from the outside.
I am trying to set VNC. VNC requires portforwarding of 5800 and 5900 and I have that set up on both the VT1000 and the D-Link. Can someone tell me why I cant ping my WAN IP from the outside? Does the VT1000 have some sort of block on WAN IP pings? I have been surfing through the forums I have discovered that the VT1000 acts as another NAT on top my of D-Link, and I will disable one of the NAT's, but I cant figure out why I cant ping myself. I disabled WAN IP ping blocking on the D-Link, so I think the problem must reside in the VT1000
Need help!! |

I am not sure what you mean when you say the ping starts failing. I am trying to ping it from another PC on the internet, and I have had some of my friends try and ping it from their machines.
I do not have a software firewall. Comcast does not block ping requests. I have been successful in pinging my IP when I have removed my router and my VT1000 from the arrangement and plug the Ethernet directly into my NIC card |

well I really don't have any good ideas, but since no one else has posted yet, I guess my next question is, can you have just the router or just the vt1000 connected (as opposed to both). what happens then when you try to ping? |

Thats explains alot. I have placed my VT1000 behind my firewall. Monday, I am going to ping it from work and see what happens. My D-Ling router is now the first poitn of contact from the Internet, so I think I may have resolved my problem and I should be able to use VNC now. Thanks for all the help - I will post Monday with results |
