PostPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2007 1:44 pm    Post subject: Incoming International Calls horrible! Reply with quote Back to top

Just got going on Vonage a few weeks ago but we're having issues with incoming call quality. We have relatives in Sweden that call and we get nothing but delay and static. We never had these issues before when we used a proper landline. I'm wondering if part of the issue is that they use a phone card when calling. But Im not about to tell them to stop using a phone card when they call because it makes things much much cheaper for them. And it seems a little unreasonable that we would have to call every time. I have set the voice quality to highest in my account settings and had no downloads going at the time of the calls. Any ideas on how to fix this? If it doesn't improve I'll most likely have to switch back to a regular land line unfortunately.

You did not include all the test results. Run the test again, once completed click on the advanced tab, view text. Copy and paste that information to your post.

Your test results are very good. There's nothing in your test results that would, and can explain the issue you're having. Do you make any other international calls besides to Sweden, and if you do how is the call quality? Try rebooting all your devices and if the problem persists, you will have to contact tech support about this issue.

You mentioned that you set your call quality to the highest setting. I don't know if that means you have already tried or not but try using the 30kbps setting and see if that helps. Since the voice has to travel such a far distance, decreasing the amount of information that needs to be sent could help your problem. I've been using Vonage outside the US for a year and I have a lot more issues if I use the 90kbps setting. In my mind, it's because of the distance and the amount of information I am sending. I'm not an expert but give it a try.

I have my setting to highest and I call from Germany to Ontario on a cell phone and call quality is perfect.

My wife calls me to my hotel using a free online service and the call quality is also perfect, it might be the line you are calling.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went in and adjusted the quality setting to be at normal to see if that makes any difference. I was also poking around Vonages help site about this and it mentioned something about specific ports that needed to be opened on the router for Vonage, so I went and opened them too.

We made and recieved calls from two different land line numbers in Sweden but they both had delay, both callers were geographically close to each other too. So I guess it could be an issue with the phone system on their end. Anyways, they are supposed to call today so I will see how it sounds today.
