PostPosted: Mon Oct 22, 2007 12:13 am    Post subject: Short-term up-time on RTP300 Reply with quote Back to top

In the past 3 weeks, my phone adapter has not been working properly. If I power it down, then back on again, it will work fine. After about 3 hours, however, it will not work. No dial tone, no incoming or outgoing calls. The RTP300 has been working flawlessly for several months prior to this.

I've tried resetting and restarting the RTP300, and every other device on the network. I've also reconfigured my entire network several times, including connecting the RTP300 directly to the modem, with no change. I'm fresh out of ideas short of canceling my service. Anyone have any new ideas? Here's the info you want:

1. Your location: Minnesota, area code 763
2. Your ISP name: Comcast Cable
3. Upload and download speeds: Comcast says 6 MB/s DL, no info on upload, but generally about 2 MB/s
4. Modem make and model: Motorola SB5100
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: RTP300
6. Setup of Network: A bit larger than average:

Cable modem connected to
- Linksys WRT54G which feeds:
- Vonage RTP300
- XBox 360
- Linux based firewall/NAT PC (running Smoothwall). Behind which is:

- A larger 16 port ethernet swiitch with several home PC's connected.

The RTP300 was connected to the larger switch (behind the firewall) where it worked fine before. I moved it out to verify it wasn't the firewall affecting it. No network changes were made until after the problem started.

7. Issue you are experiencing: very short up-time on RTP300 (less than 3 hours at a time)

8. Voip Test:

Pretty decent internet connection...

Any thoughts or creative ideas?

When the phone service goes out, do other things on your network continue to work?

If so, and given that you've already tried connecting the RTP300 directly to the modem, I'd surmise that either your ISP is taken hits that takes the RTP300 down, or the RTP300 is suffering a thermal problem. Try cooling it with a fan and seeing if that makes a difference.

When the RTP300 goes down, everything else on the network continues to work fine. If a computer is plugged into the RTP300, that won't function when it goes down (using the RTP300 as a switch/router). No other networking problems at all, my network tends to be incredibly stable...

I'll try cooling it with a fan and update in a day or so...

So I left the RTP300 powered off for several hours to make sure it had cooled completely. I then powered it up with a fan and additional air circulation. It worked initially, but again ceased to function after several hours...

Any other ideas, or should I just look at replacing the box? If a replacement is in order, is there a more stable device available?

If you have a cooperative friend with broadband, I'd make one more try and see if the same thing happens if you connect the RTP300 to his/her system. The RTP300 is actually a pretty good box, but if you have to replace it and want to try something else, I'm happy with my VT2442.
