Hi guys,

I know you may get tons of these questions, but I have scoured through the forum without finding an specific answer.

I currently have a configuration:

cable -> RT31P2 -> BEFW11S4 (wireless B)

where voice is decent and upload/download too. Wireless never worked totally fine (dropped every once in a while but I suspect my old laptop's card)

Now I'm getting a new laptop with an Intel 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card.
I'm am thinking on replacing the routers altogether and getting the Linksys WRTP54G for Vonage. I have scoured up and down the forum and most of the people like it but I would like to inquire the experts and gurus what is the best all-in-one router.

Thanks a lot for your time.

This is the way I went. WRT54GS, PAP2 phone adapter. Two desktops and one laptop and all setup in a flash.I have had Vonage for about 2.5 years now and had the WRTP54G. It was good until about 2 months ago and the it gave up, but I like the new setup more than what I had. Just a thought.

Is the PAP2 necessary? I thought the WRT54GS is an all-in-one.

Thanks,

No, the WRT54GS is not an all in one, so the PAP2 is necessary in this setup. Actually, most people in here don't think much of the Vonage boxes as routers, including the WRTP54. A good stand alone wireless router with QoS feeding a simple Vonage box, like Abera's setup, is the typical recommendation. If you like the BEFW11S4, stick with what you've got. If the BEF has good QoS capability, you might consider putting it first.

The problem is that my BEFW11S4 has only 11.b wireless standard, whereas my new laptop has 11.g so I'm looking forward to get a wireless router that takes advantage of that standard.

I think my reply was confusing. I believe it is the WRTP54G the all-in-one since it says that supports wireless and has two phone jacks...it reads in the description:

"Wireless-G Broadband Router with 2 Phone Ports for Vonage
All-In-One Wireless-G Networking and Internet telephony!"

Linksys Router

So I'm wondering if this product could give reliable voice + internet or if I still need a dedicated phone adapter in front of it.

You're correct. The WRTP54G is an all in one. With it, you won't need another adapter. Whether it will meet your needs is another question. If all you need is a light duty router, it should suffice. If you want something more robust, because you do a lot of downloading, game playing, and so forth, then a setup like what Abera described is recommended.

Uhmm...that just scratched down my WRTP54G plan...

Ok so you and Abera are suggesting:

My cable box (I believe it is a Motorola provided by Cox cable)---> Linksys PAP2--->WRT54GS

Is the most recommended setup for an 11.g connection?

If now I'm going to rely on a phone adapter could I use my current Linksys RT31P2 phone adapter instead of the Linksys PAP2? Or is the Linksys PAP2 a better phone adapter?

Here are the stats on my setup.

The new PAP2 and WRT54GS gave me a 20% better than my old setup with the WRTP54.

My Speed

The tests were taken from my laptop. Not the system with the router and PAP2 adapter is on.

Lovin it

Layout gos:
Cable ->WRT54GS -> PAP2 -> PC

What are the advantages of putting the wireless router first? Does that mean you prioritize internet connection over voice calls (although 93% is great compared to mi dismal 83%) ?

Steve48 may be able to give the technical reason, because I don't know, but that's the way Linksys says to set it up.
