Putting the good, robust router first means that you don't have to rely on the Vonage box for throughput. The router designed for that takes care of it. It does mean that the main router needs to have QoS set up to favor the Vonage box, so that you avoid choppy calls when you're both downloading and phoning.
The RT31P2 will serve you fine doing nothing but phone adapter duty, so there's no need to replace it. However, if you do decide to hang a computer on its LAN side (not really recommended if you can avoid it), be sure that the LAN sub-net addressing on the RT31P2 and the main router are set to different ranges. |

Steve48,
Why would I want to connect my computer to the RT31P2 if I could connect to the LAN computer to the WRT54GS ? Unless I'm missing something, I'm thinking on this configuration (and please bare with me because despite being a 2 year Vonage user I'm still a plug-and-play noob): computers connected to wireless router, RT31P2 conncted to phone box.
| Code: | DESKTOP PC (wired) Telephone Box | | CABLE--->WRT54GS WIRELESS ROUTER--->RT31P2 | | Laptop 1 (11.b) Laptop 2 (11.g)
|
So this would mean that I would need to setup QuOS on the router and voila?
Thanks a lot guys! |

You've got it right.
You probably wouldn't want to connect a computer to the RT31P2; that's why I said that it's not really recommended. However, some folks have so many computers that they need the extra port, so they use the LAN side of the RT31P2. |

Steve48,
Thanks a lot for your support! I'll order the WRT54GS and since I haven't done this setting before I may need to ask about networking, QuOS... |

Ok guys. Got the WRT54GS, connected following the diagram(BTW connected from the "internet port" of the RT31P2 to an available port on the WRT54GS). Internet and wireless seem working fine. Problem is with the phone. If wired and wireless computers are browsing (no heavy download just surfing) QoS goes down to 29%. I tried setting up QoS on the WRT54GS using the "port" method by setting it to Priority=High and Flow Control = Enable on the port that I connect the RT31P2 and after 5 min the system crashed (no internet access) and I have to re-start the system and disable QOS on the WRT54GS. I have firmware 7.50.2. I would greatly appreciate any input. |
