Hi,

Does anyone have any information / suggestions / documentation / how-to on unlocking this device (Motorola VT2442-VD) so it can be used with other providers?

Your help is much appreciated!

Thanks.

If you had of read the TOS before signing up with Vonage, you will notice that there is a "no tampering with device" section in there. It also states that you can not use the device with another provider. Bottom line, there is no way to "unlock it".

Well the reason I ask about unlocking it is so that I can use it with another provider. And technically, I've purchased the unit so its mine.
Of course, there's no need to unlock it while I'm still using their service, but once I cancel, the device is mine to do with as I wish.

Anyway, I found the software to unlock it and will give it a try when I cancel.

You are, of course, free to do as you wish, but just so people don't get the wrong idea . . .

What you say is absolutely NOT true -- you are right, the HARDWARE is yours, you purchased it. But that is just a bunch of circuits, chips, and plastic. What you are talking about unlocking is actually SOFTWARE (specifically, the firmware of the router), and, the fact is, you DID NOT purchase that software -- you purchased a LICENSE TO USE that software, and, by purchasing it, agreed to very specific legal terms, one of which is you can't tamper with it, change it, or "unlock" it. The moment you violate any part of the license you agreed to, the license is REVOKED and, therefore, not only can you not do anything you want with it, you can, in fact, no longer do ANYTHING with it, because you are no longer legally entitled to use it at all.

Again . . . you can do what you want, just understand the LEGAL position (and, for the record, I'm right there with you -- I think you SHOULD be able to do whatever you want with it, as long as it doesn't hurt the maker, Vonage in this case.)

Fair enough.

But I thought the software on the device is not owned by Vonage. Its Motorola, right? The 'locking' that Vonage does is just change the admin password and pre-configure the device with their SIP (or whatever else) settings.
I don't believe Vonage actually loads their own software or firmware on the box.

Again, thanks for clearing things up.

BTW....no, the software does not belong to motorola...it belongs to Vonage. Any doubts of that, try calling motorola for tech assistance on that router...or linksys for support on one of the Vonage linksys routers.........try upgrading your firmware and find out where that comes from-----NOT from motorola.
