PostPosted: Sat Oct 13, 2007 11:03 pm    Post subject: Motorola SB5120 Modem (NO ROUTER). Can I still use Vonage? Reply with quote Back to top

I just purchased Vonage and I am using a Motorola SB5120 modem (no built in router) with a Linksys ATA. I have high speed cable internet. When I hook everything up, I get the following message:

This connection has limited or no connectivitiy. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. For more information, click this message.

It won't assign an IP address!!! I accessed TCP/IP settings, DHCP is enabled. Automatic IP assignment is selected, etc etc etc etc etc. I don't know what else to do. I can't access the internet, therefore I can't use my new Voip phone =(

Why isn't it assigning an IP address? I've rebooted everything 5000 times, everything is plugged in correctly. Ethernet to comp, internet to ATA. Must I have a router to use Voip? Why?

Gracias =) Eek

You do not need a router.
The proper setup is
Modem -> Vonage Adapter -> Computer
If set up in that order, it should work.
Shut down all items. Restart Modem, allow it to properly boot, start Vonage adapter, allow it to boot, the start computer. It should properly assign ip addresses. If not you may need to release and config the ip address of the computer.

thank you but i have done everything you said hundreds of times, since friday afternoon. i have spent countless hours on this computer, googling, messing with TCP/IP settings, resetting this and that, rebooting, shutting down devices, plugging everything in and out/in and out/in and out.... no results!! it just simply will not assign an IP address. but once i unplug the linksys adapter and plug ethernet back into computer directly, internet comes back up so nice and lovely.

i really wish i could use this phone. tech support is clueless too. i wish i knew what the problem was.

Call your cable company. Sometimes they bind your IP to the mac of your computer and will not assign it to another device. Get a router. It will make your situation so much easier. They are cheap.

tglea - I love you! You have no idea how many countless hours I have spent trying to resolve this issue. It has been the biggest headache EVER!!!! I called my cable company, said exactly what you wrote... and what do you know? That was the problem, and my phone works now Smile

I've posted on so many forums since Friday, received over 50 responses, and you had the right answer. THANK YOU!!!!! =)
