British, wire your test computer directly into the D-link, not into a bridge or anything else. Re-run the test. If the results are still poor, plug the computer directly into the modem and verify that the problem goes away. At that point you will have verified 100% that the D-link is the problem. Right now you're probably at 95% certainty, but let's get that last 5%. |

set the WAN IP of the Vonage to static.and do a port forwarding on the dlink.thats 10000-20000 UDP protocol and 5060-5061 UDP protocol..or if not set it to DMZ..this will open ports for your Vonage and will not filter those voice.. |

Kumakuma - the port forwarding is in place and those ports are already allowed. I tried putting the LinksysPAP in the DMZ previously and it made no difference
DentalRep - My guess is that your test PC that you used for the Voip test is wired to the DLink - Can you confirm?
Steve48 - I wired my test PC directly to the Dlink and immediately got 0% Server > Me packet loss. An obvious improvement but still I'm not convinced that this is a correct result since a true consistent 100% loss would surely result in NO service at all for Vonage?
Interestingly, when wired to the Dlink (which then puts me at 1Gbps) the service was quality of service varied from between 67% and 96%, but when I switched back to wireless right next to the router I still only hit 50% quality on the single attempt I tried it. So wired is definitely an improvement but that could be a speed-related issue rather than anything else...I'm not sure how the test tool quantifies 'quality'. My wireless is running at 54Mbps.
I hope to test the Linksys directly wired to the DLink later this week since I am pretty much out of options, but its a real pain to do it with my setup and shouldn't be necessary at all...again, I had the Linksys hanging off the wireless bridge for over 1 year and it worked fine until the router was 'upgraded'.
Any other ideas welcome, but I'll let you know what the direct attach does once I've driven myself mad.
Thanks, Brit |

Well, I moved house, which allowed me to wire the Vonage LinksysPAP directly to the DLink DIR-655 and this seems to have resolved the issue. I still don't know what the cause of this was or why it happened, but a workaround is better than nothing I guess.
So, to summarize, when using the DIR-655 router connected to the Vonage LinksysPAP wirelessly over a Netgear bridge, I had some breakup on incoming audio. Outgoing was never a problem.
I hesitate to say that the wireless bridge was at fault since this has been in place for over 18 months and the whole setup worked fine with my old router (Belkin Pre-N router).
Therefore I would suggest that something in the combination of the DIR-655 and the Netgear bridge was causing the issue, but I wasn't able to identify it.
Hopefully my travails will help anyone else who might run into this in the future...
Thanks to all for your input. British |
