Does anyone know of a way to get the linksys device that Vonage is now shipping to tag packets? Or of any SOHO type router that will tag packets? My ISP gives a higher priority to Voip packets, and I would like to be able to take advantage of this. |

I haven't received my unit yet, but I'd be interested to see how you fare.
BTW, what ISP?
Never really done much 802.1p tagging outside of VLANs at work, and on my home switches for kicks. |

ISP is ChiliTech (www.chilitech.net).... they have a fairly decent wireless network in the Williamsport, PA area.... I'm currently using Vonage over it and it works really well.... running over Alvarion outdoor wireless gear. |

Very interesting: Voip over fixed wireless. I think the drawback of increased latency is clearly outweighed by the benefit of 100% uptime. Unlike the current crappy scenario I have with rr.com. Some numnut put in an irrigation system 2 months ago, and I have been going back and forth with them since.
Short of somebody building a tall building, you will never have to deal with such an issue. And your synchronous speeds up & down are beautiful too.
I'm envious. |

Yeah.. there is a generator at the primary cell site on the mountain.... only downtime could be as you said if someone put a large tower in the way.. and latency on fixed terrestrial wireless isn't bad at all.... it's only going a mile or two at the most... |

Oh yeah.. I might meantion I have 1 wire coming onto my house electricity...
I have oil heat... gas hot water.... both underground (tank is in my basement for oil). We don't have cable TV at the house.. so I had the cable company remove the box. Had the phone company remove their box today....
so the only wire coming to the house is electric... .internet and phone run over the fixed wireless link |

Just for those wondering.. the Linksys 2P adapter that Vonage is now shipping does packet tagging out of the box. Vonage says it can't be setup.. so either they don't know about it?? or I dunno what... but it definately is tagging outgoing Voip packets.... I work for the ISP I use... and today the wireless admin and I (I'm the wired side admin).. were looking at my traffic over the traffic shaper we have (I've been having some breakup problems on my sound).. and we saw audio coming FROM my house being marked high (0x70 or 112) priority and audio going TO my house being marked normal.
I'm currently waiting to call Vonage to find out what ports they use DURING a call so we can put those into the traffic shaper and set 0x70 priority on them, to allow for clear calling..... |
