I’ve had Vonage for almost 2 years. I’ts never had perfect voice quality consistently, but I chalked it up to the fact that it was over the internet, and the cost was so much less that I thought I would put up with it. Lately, though, all of the people we call are complaining about the poor connection and several times I have had to hang up and re-initiate the call because the drop-outs were so bad.

Some more info – almost all of these calls are to Canada, and most incoming calls are via a virtual number we have in Ottawa. Incoming and outgoing calls seem to have equal issues. The connection is seldom being used otherwise while we’re on the phone (no large data transfers or file sharing).

About a month ago, I found instructions from Linksys on port forwarding on the router for Vonage. I thought I saw an improvement, but it soon went back to the previous bad connection. I have not taken this up with Vonage technical support, because I usually find phone technical support people of all kinds are not very helpful.

Any suggestions?

My Location: Trumbull CT
My ISP – Earthlink DSL (through COVAD)
My Upload and download speeds: 1.5Mbps (I think, I don’t know all the details on the speeds…)
Modem – VisionNet ADSL 200ES
Vonage Adapter – PAP2
Setup – Modem--> Router (WRT54G Ver 2) --> Vonage Adapter
Issue – Choppy voice, drop-outs, delays

Your test results look ok, nothing really obvious there. Have you tried hooking your pap2 directly to your modem to see if anything improves? Although, if your DSL is ppoe, that wouldn't work. If you connect dhcp, you should give that a try. Possibly something with your router or possibly your pap2 going bad. You could also try switching your number from L1 to L2 on your pap2 and see if that helps. Another option is to lower the bandwidth if you are using the default 90kbps. There are some ideas, maybe something will help.
