Hi, I have a internet connection to the computer including Vonage connection like this. DSL modem----vonage-----computer. Now the internet in the computer doesn't work. But if I connect it like this: DSL modem-----computer. internet in the computer works.
problem is i can't use both internet on the computer and the Vonage connection at the same time. Is there a way around it or is that the way it works.
Thanks, maindoor. |

You probably need to do an iprelease on your cpu. It is still reading the ip of the modem not the router. Try this.
Unplug power to all and turn off computer
Connect Modem->Vonage adapter->computer
Power up Modem wait for lights to stabilize, plug in Vonage adapter, wait for lights to stabilize, start computer.
If you can't get on internet - Go to "Start" - "run" - Type "cmd" click OK (takes you to DOS prompt. at prompt type "ipconfig/release" after that runs type "ipconfig/renew". Close DOS window and try to access internet again. |

Hi, Thanks for the mail, but I'm seeing some other behaviour now. The internet and Ethernet light is solid green and the power light blinks continuously nonstop. it does come up at all. Both the phone line LED's also does not glow at all. What does this mean ? please don't tell me i have a fried router.
When I pick up the phone line it tells me: this telephone line is not provisioned for use, please try the other line.
Stuck, maindoor. |

all fixed. hook or crook. made it work.
but i feel the configuration is messy.
my default gateway in the computer is now the ip address of Vonage: 192.168.15.1, and my gateway in the Vonage setup is the ip address that my isp provided me. kinda makes sense ... but can any of you experts confirm this ?
my setup is like this: dsl modem-----vonage-----computer.
Regards, maindoor. |

That should be correct if your DSL modem connects via DHCP and your computer connects via DHCP to your Vonage router. How is everything working? Able to use the computer and have Vonage at the same time now? |

This is correct. It sounds like the same problem I posted now that I see your resolution. Did you used to have a different IP address for your Vonage router? |

Yes i'm able to access both the internet and use Vonage router. I did not check what was the old configuration. Some one else had set that up. How do I tell if my internet connection has dhcp enabled in a winxp machine ? In linux i can grep for a dhcpclient and let you know. |

To check for DHCP...
Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection (or whatever your connection is called)
Click "Properties". In the scroll window, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and then click the "Properties" button.
In the wondow that pops up, there are two radio buttons. If "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected then you are using DHCP. Otherwise, you aren't.
I will assume that you aren't because if you were you wouldn't have to specify a default gateway. |
