From searching the forums I see there is a contention that Vonage does not support outbound caller ID. It may be unsupported but it has worked for me in the past - the name defined on my account would be shown to those I would call. In fact I experimented with changing my account name online and the name changes were reflected in my outbound caller id. One of Vonage's best features I thought.

Alas outbound caller ID no longer works, I'm not sure when it stopped, I've been a customer for 2.5 years. Anyone know why it no longer works and if it is possible to get it back again?

I've been a customer for 1.5years and I have never had my name show up on outbound caller id. It has always been just the number and location. I believe this is the way it is supposed to be. I think that fact that you were able to have your name was some sort of mistake that they finally corrected. **** for you. I would like to have the option of adding my name to my info.

My parents have been a Vonage customer for three years, and their name only shows on the caller IDs of people that have POTS. I think that's because their number used to be a POTS number and still has the directory listing,however, changing the name in the Vonage 'dashboard' doesn't affect it. Of course when they call my Vonage number the name doesn't show up at all, which sadly is expected. Then again, most people's names don't show up when they call me. For example, if I call my folks on their Vonage line from my cell, my name shows on their caller ID. However, if I call MY Vonage line, only my cell number is displayed. GO FIGURE!

I know this was an issue(Vonage Outbound Caller ID) on several other Voip Forums. A lot of posters stated "This is a deal breaker and hard to believe, after all they're #1". It says a lot if all other features are comparable.

Vonage doesn't display your caller ID info because they aren't really a phone company. There 3rd party carriers are the ones who really control your phone number. Vonage owns your number but routes your outgoing calls through the 3rd party and then on to the PSTN. If the 3rd party carriers enabled caller ID then it would read Vonage holdings corp LLC.... if that makes any sense?

I understand what you are describing, but many other smaller Voip companies display outbound name and if this fact would be known up front, many would move on.

In the old days, caller ID was a function of system signaling 7 which is a protocol that the "phone" companies use for data transmission about calls. I believe SS7 is still used but has been upgraded. Some of the new switches (PBX) allow the transmission of caller ID on outbound calls. SS7 allows this data to be transmitted along with the call.

My limited knowledge would say that Vonage does not have the software ability to put in customer names and their software defaults to the telephone number. I have noticed that in calling toll free numbers, Vonage Holdings sometimes appears as the caller's ID.

Point of fact, you cannot hide your telephone number when calling toll free numbers. Your number is ALWAYS transmitted to the customer either at the time of the call or when billing takes place. *67 does not block caller ID for toll free calling.
