Hi, after two go-rounds with tech support, I've discovered that we can't get anywhere close to solving my problem. I'm sure I'm not the only one doing this configuration. If I can't get it right via the forums, I'm going to have to cancel my Vonage account because, simply put, if this continues to be difficult, I don't want anything to do with it. I've spent too much time on it already.

Sorry for that preamble, but it's a true voice of frustration borne of ineffective phone customer support, mostly because of a lack of Mac knowledge.

My configuration is
1) Time Warner Cable Modem (Scientific Atlanta)
2) Vonage Router (Motorola VT2142
3) Apple Airport Extreme
4) G5 with Mac OS X.4.9

What I need to do is assign LAN addresses to the Router and the Airport. This involves going into the router interface and...what? This is where we stall on customer support, or else my cellphone battery dies waiting for the support guy to read through the Mac guide and then return to ask me whether I'm OS 9 or OS X (seriously).

After the router interface is set up, it's a matter of setting up Airport, which I've done before sans Vonage, and believe I can do again.

After that, it's a matter of going into System Preferences>Network and configuring my computer. This is always a hairy proposition, considering all the possible ways to screw things up in there.

Then, voila they all link together in this manner:
http://portforward.com/help/doublerouterportforwarding.htm

If only I could get 1/3 of the way. Help!

I am not sure I fully follow what you are trying to do. The VT2142 is a router, so it has a DHCP client, so it should automatically assign an IP address to devices that are connected to it. There should be no need to log into the VT2142 unless you were given a static WAN IP address by Time Warner that you need to enter in or you want to forward ports for a specific application. Just plugging the VT2142 into your cable modem and rebooting both devices so the router can pull a fresh DHCP lease from your ISP should be sufficient for almost every setup. After this just plug the Airport into the LAN port on the VT2142, reboot the Airport and you should be up and running.

I don't see anything Apple specific about this so you might need to clarify a little bit about what exactly you are trying to do.

Thank you, yes, that's it exactly. I don't want the dreaded 'double NAT' situation, so I need to forward both ports. For that (unless I'm wrong) I need to assign IP addresses to the devices in the chain, as per the link at the bottom of my first post.

Okay, never mind. I'm cancelling my account Monday.

I love the idea of the product, but forget it. Maybe in a few years.

I'm probably going to have to cancel my account too Sad
I can't find anyone who can help solve my Mac problem either.
