I agree with the name in the email.
as for your first question, this is what the voicemail email settings page says:
"Note: Please enter only one email address."

I setup an "alias" on my mail server (your ISP may be able to do it for you).. so that:

vmvonage@mydomain.com goes to ---> cell phone & e-mail

This way if I'm at the computer I get the message sent to me.. if I'm away my phone lets me know I have a message...

not sure what the other guys issue was.. but with Verizon I can see the person's name and phone number they called from as well as which number of mine they called.. very nice.. all fits in one message.

I took the alias approach as well so that my wife and I both get email, along with the vmail message itself.

But getting back to the original poster's question, perhaps he could have it go to a regular email client, and setup a mail rule there to forward to cell phone with just the info he wants? Leave your email client running at home and when you get an email from yournumber@vm.vonage.com, execute this mailrule..
Just a thought.

The original issue still stands.

Even the header for the e-mail that is sent is near or at 160 characters.

So, instead of only offering e-mail notification, I'm looking for Vonage to offer the option to send an SMS text message to a cell phone number, which is much less of a character hog.

Just send:

<Caller Name> called at <time> on <date> from <phone number> and left a <message length> second message.

All the above information can be pulled right from the database.

I bet the average size would be under 110 characters - well below the 160 limit.

I'm guessing that most of the Vonage community would be interested in this feature.

I'm not sure what your problem is?
Who is your cell provider?

What I get is:

Date: Jan 17 2005 07:07:34 PM
From: Outside Caller (1570xxxxxxx)
To: My Name (1570mynumber)

That's 88 characters.

Even if you include:
You have 1 unreviewed message(s).
it's only 122 characters.

I think the problem, my friend, is with your cell provider. Verizon happily sends me the message in proper formatting and all is well.. I get only one SMS per voice mail from Vonage.

I'm getting: (Cingular)

Message 1:

1860999999@vm.vonage.com(you have received a new voicemail message)Date: Jan 17 2005 10:12:07 PM From: Outside Caller (18609999999) To :Myyyyyy Nameeee (+ From: 36245 10:12pm 17-Jan-05

Message 2:

2/2 18609999999) You have 1 unreviewed message(s). From:36245 10:12pm 17-Jan-05

The first message has 160 characters (about) and the second message has an additional 70.

Yes, this is the exact text that I get and yes, I'm being told the message time three times, plus it is telling me my phone number twice.

I'm using Cingular, GSM phone (Motorola T720)

I think the message is pretty much the same when I send it to a POP3 e-mail address.

If the problem is the same when you go to regular email, maybe it is a Vonage problem. Here is what I get when I point it to my email. (Granted, I am hiding the HUGE header with my email program, as I normally would.)

Code:
Date: Jan 17 2005 11:05:05 PM
From: Outside Caller (198666591190523)
To  : My Name (My Number)
You have 2 unreviewed message(s).

I should clarify.

I get the same amount of text going to a POP account (I will double check that today), but I'm only getting one e-mail.

The "simple header" version of the e-mail sent to my regular e-mail address is as follows:

Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 12:25:45 -0500
From: 18605551234@vm.vonage.com
To: steve@mydomain.com
Subject: You have received a new voicemail message

Date: Jan 18 2005 12:25:43 PM
From: Outside Caller (18605554321)
To : Stephen McGough (18605551234)
You have 1 unreviewed message(s).

The first section above is the header and the second section is the body of the e-mail. Too long.
