PostPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2007 3:21 pm    Post subject: Internet LED on router blinks and a moment of silence? Reply with quote Back to top

On my (new) Vonage VT2142, I noticed that every 10 seconds or so, the Internet LED flicks off and then back on again.

At the same time as this 'blink' of the LED, if I'm on call there is a soft click and there is a very quick moment of silence. Its as if there is a really short dropout as the router is sending or receiving some sort of non-voice related data.

Is this behavior normal?

Question

It's normal for the internet led to blink on and off.

Run the speed test and post your results. http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test.html

Ok.

Thanks for the answer - I'll not worry about it now.

The speed test reveals that I could run up to 12 "high quality" Voip lines over my link.......

Not all THAT fast, but then it's what I've paid for, so.....

Cool

Although it's normal for the internet led to blink on and off constantly, it's not normal for you to have moments of silence or dropouts. I posted the link to Voip speedtest in my previous post for you to run and if you would post the results of the test. The results may help to determine what's causing your dropouts or moments of silence.

Your test results are very good. There's nothing obivious in your results that would explain your momentary period of silence. Do you experience this issue all the time when on a call? Do you have anything running (P2P file sharing or the like) in the background that may cause this ? Could you explain how your network is setup and is the router secure?

I don't know if it's the same problem as mine but I had exactly the same symptoms. In my case I had a gigabit router plugged into one of the the LAN ports of my RTP300, with all my computers and stuff connected to the router. It turned out that the port on my gigabit router that was connected to the RTP300 was faulty and it would shut down for a second or so at a time every 30 seconds.

I don't really know what was going on but every time the gigabit port shut off, the WAN port on my RTP300 would freeze up, causing the same symptoms you describe. When I switched my LAN connection to a different port on the gigabit router, everything went back to being normal.

A TIP for everyone new to Vonage - or how I improved this problem to the point where it's effectively fixed...

On the Vonage web account, set your bandwidth saver to be on the highest setting, so Vonage uses more bandwidth. The default setting (the middle option) was just not enough. In these days of high speed networking why is the default the middle one?

Once I did that, the quality of the audio on the calls improved noticeably and the odd drop out I noticed before have nearly all gone away. I'd say this problem is down to about 10 or 15% of what it was before, which puts this into the more or less acceptable category. Cool

I placed a call to a BT POTS line in the UK this morning (I'm in Texas, USA) and the voice quality was outstanding. Only one of these drop outs in a 15 minute call.

Oh yes - and with Vonage, as you all know, this was a "free" call. Such value for money - can't ask for more.

Lol
