PostPosted: Fri Sep 21, 2007 9:24 pm    Post subject: Change baud rate on hp 1040? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I just signed up with Vonage, and my fax machine successfully sent one outgoing fax and then stopped sending and receiving. I'm turned off the ECM and am trying to figure out how to change the baud rate.

I tried searching this forum for any tips on how to change the baud rate on an HP 1040 fax machine to 9600. I saw directions for another HP model, but it does not work on the 1040. It's not on the manual, and I didn't want to pay for tech support through HP. Does anyone have tips?

Thanks Very Happy

I am in the same boat. I have had Vonage since they came out, but have just picked up the HP 1040 today. I had two fax errors, re-booted all of my devices and now she has sent a successful fax.
Fingers crossed. Eek

See if what works for the 4110 works for you. Kinda wierd that you have to do all that to change the baud rate...

Arrow "Same instructions". Pressing the * and # keys at the same time doesn't put you into a setup mode with the HP 1040. I have gone through all the advanced fax options and there is nothing for setting the baud rate.
A wired Verizon act is starting to look attractive at $39.00 per month for unlimited local and long. Eek

I too tried the same exact thing already - those instructions definitely do not work on the 1040. I was hoping that someone might know how to get into the setup mode on a 1040. Or maybe it's not possible to change the baud speed.

Anyway, I just switched from a hard wired Verizon line hoping to save some money since I don't use the fax much, and I'm determined to make it work! Maybe I just have to buy another fax machine that generally works better with Voip. Confused

But if anyone has any hp 1040 programming tips, please pass them along!

Same issue as others - a real disappointment that the HP 1040 baud rate cannot be changed to work on Vonage. I guess it's time to get a different FAX machine, but what??? I Goggled Vonage+ (several options) and am just not comfortable that any FAX will work...??? Is there a basic FAX machine someone can recommend????

Ok so they say to turn off the ECM mode, I found it doesn't make a difference either way...BUT...to change the baud rate here are the instructions...(my local shop got the instructions after HP tech support couldn't figure it out)

To enter tech mode:

Press menu, #, 1,9,3,4

(you will know that you're in tech mode because there will be an astrisk between the date and time)

Then go to: Menu -> Basic Fax -> Fax speed

Select 9600, press Start/Enter

Get back to the date and time screen then press again "menu, #,1,9,3,4" and you will be out of tech mode...

Hope that helps...I changed mine and still haven't had satisfactory results, in fact, I think it's worse now than before...

That'll be $30 for the technical help, BTW Smile

Thanks for the responses, everyone. After many hours taken away from my life that I'll never get back fiddling with this stupid fax problem, I've given up and I'm switching back to Verizon landlines.

h8_1040, I'm impressed that you found out how to change the baud rate! One up on HP customer service! But **** that it didn't help you after all that trouble.

Vonages' customer service is horrendous! Evil or Very Mad And I was only able to send faxes but never receive them. For the interim, I ended up forwarding my fax number to rapidfax.com (for their 35 day free trial) until my Verizon landlines are back up.

Vonage should not advertise that fax lines work with Voip, since that is a lie! The technology is still very unreliable at this point since fax machines are built for land lines. My home phone is through Time Warner digital phone service, and I now remember them telling me clearly that fax lines do not work with their service a while back. At least they don't lie.

Anyway, to those who are still trying to make their fax machines work with Vonage, GOOD LUCK! You'll need it!

peace Smile

Faxing can indeed be very frustrating when using an internet phone service such as Vonage. If you need help in configuring your fax to work properly, I suggest VoIPFrustration . It is a wonderful source for many common fax machine makes and models and tells you detailed instructions on how to change Baud Rate, Error Correction Mode (ECM), and Resolution.

Hope it helps!
