During the outages the power light remains solid, the internet light flashes and the telephone light is out completely. When it is working all is solid. Last night I rolled back the BEFSR41 router firmware to factory default and there was no overnight outage however, when I booted up the PC this morning and went to a web page the computer just hung and the adapter went out again. Powered down all the devices ( modem, router, adapter) and rebooted. Obviously, I'm up and running again. When the adapter goes out there is no phone and no internet.
By the way, all the lights blink when I'm on a phone call. |

Before you added the router and the Vonage device, did you have any issues with your ISP or your dsl modem staying connected to the internet? If not, it's either the router or the PAP2 that's the issue. I would lean more so to it being the router now because you say you can't surf the internet when the adapter goes out. If it were the adapter that was causing the problem with your phone service, only your phone service should be out, NOT your ability to access the internet.
Do you have a friend or neighbor who has a router that would allow you to borrow it to connect with your PAP2 for testing purposes? |

No problems before the router and adapter. Took the router out of the equation for two days and the adapter connection and call audio were flawless. As we already established there is no internet without the router.
I would welcome any suggestions as to a replacement for the Linksys BEFSR41. Would wireless or a modem/router combo be a better bet?
Maybe someone has a possible work around solution? |

The Linksys WRT54GL is considered to be an excellent router. If I were in need of a new router, this would be my preference. I don't believe you can find this router at any of the big box stores, you will have to purchase it online. newegg.com is a very reputable online retailer. You can currently get this device with a $10.00 rebate and free shipping via newegg.

Before you trash the router, call your isp. My isp is always very helpful even with things that don't nessasaraly require their attention. If I really had to guess the Mac address's sound in conflict. I'm no expert, but I wouldn't give up on the router just yet! It's really hard to tear one of them up, unless you interrupt a firmware update! |

You may also try resetting everything in the chain. Disconnect the power from the modem, router, and PAP2 for 2 minutes. Make sure the computer is off and disconnect any other device connecting to the internet. Then reconnect the modem and wait at least 5 minutes after all the normal on lights come on. Then reconnect the router and wait 2 minutes. Then reconnect the PAP2 and wait for all lights to go solid. Then reconnect any other items, one at a time.
It sounds like the internet connection is lost after being idle for a long time. It may be a conflict between the router and modem, these are often both DHCP enabled and get into fights if not setup correctly. Following the above procedure often makes them play nice together.
What is the modem brand/model and service type (Cable, DSL,etc)? |

Small miracle. I'm almost afraid to jinx it. Two days after resting the router and reconnecting everything again there haven't been any issues. Hopefully whatever the problem was has corrected itself. Thanks for all the help! I'll certainly be back if they resurface. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Modem is an ATT DSL Briteport 8012 |

I just knew I would jinx myself!! Yesterday morning I wake up and the lights on the PAP2 are blinking again. This time there's no phone LED, Internet is steading and the power light is blinking three and stop, three and stop repeatedly. I go through the usual power down all and reboot and still no change.
I access the IVRS and there is no IP address and I'm getting a "line is not provisioned message", "line can not register to Vonage network" and "cannnot contact Vonage network". Call to customer service resulted in the suggestion of a static IP address. As I didn't have time to initiate anymore useless resolutions follow through on that step has not happened yet.
The online utility for the Linksys BEFSR41 router is not recognizing the adapter I think. The gateway address is blank and the ipconfig on the computer says that DCHP is not enabled.
I did not change a single thing, what the heck is going on now???
In order to use the phone I have to remove the router from the set up. In order to use the internet I have to remove the adapter.
This is becoming really frustrating please help!!! |

That DSL 8012 (BritePort Broadxent 8012 V1?) modem appears to be an older modem with many configuration problems when adding a router. The modem is only designed for a single PC from the information I have, but can be configured to be used with a router. Is this an ISP supplied modem or did you purchase it? If a supplied modem then I would call your ISP and ask for a different modem that is more router friendly or have them go thru setup to configure it properly.
It is your modem and router not playing nice together. There is a slim chance it is a defective router, but I doubt it.
You need to get the internet connection to stay connected all the time to get the PAP2 to work correctly. I assume you are losing internet connection after the modem? Or is it the modem also losing connection (according to the lights on the front of the modem and router)? |

mr_no_luck I believe that you are correct about the modem and router. The lights on the modem are always on regardless of my setup. Its the router not being accepted into the fold.
I will call my ISP tomorrow to see if they are any help. AT&T supplied the modem as part of the service. Hopefully they can help.
Will keep you posted. |
