I am not a Vonage user, so I don't know much about this. But, my brother has been deployed to Afghanistan and I heard that Vonage has a phone you can use to call them on a local number...is this V-Phone/SoftPhone this service?
If someone can bring me up to speed on what exactly this is, what we need to make this work, etc. so that I can see about getting him set up, that would be wonderful!
Thanks. |

Sorry that no one had answered your question.
You are correct about using Vonage over seas. Not sure how good of internet connection the guys have in Afghanistan.
In order for someone to use V-phone or soft phone they need to have an account with Vonage.
With the soft phone they have to have a computer available of their own to put this software on.
With V-phone it is a usb device that you can plug into any computer with internet access and make phone calls.
There is an alternative to this. If your brother has a Vonage account back in the states and he has a computer in Afghanistan he can download a free application from Vonage called Vonage talk. He can make and receive phone calls to any North American phone number.
Vonage Talk is free, Softphone cost extra on top of your Vonage account and V-phone is about $40 to purchase.
All 3 require an internet access. |

Skype is Free for computer to computer calls. May not work on a DOD network though.
Vonage is a better real phone than skype. Skype needs a computer |

I have been a loyal Vonage customer for a couple of years, but if I were going over seas, I would consider bringing a magicJack instead of a v-phone. http://www.magicjack.com
The magicJack costs $60 for two years of unlimited calls, (compare that to the monthly cost of a v-phone) connects via USB, and can be used with a real phone or a headset. |
