PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2007 10:02 pm    Post subject: I'm having a bandwidth issue Reply with quote Back to top

Hi, My name is Steve,

I'm having a bandwidth issue and please my apologies if this a long message but I want to make sure I get an accurate answer if any one can give me one. I have a gateway computer it is only a few months old. I have a intel cor 2 duo in it fsb 800 mhz 2 m3g level 2 cache. Memory 2 gig (DDR2 DUAL CHANNEL) intel motherboard. 500 gig hard drive it is raid compatbale, but I have raid disabled in the bios and I'm going with ide. I'm not using 2 hard drives just the 500 gig 16 meg cache 7200 rpm's not the new 10,000. Well I just got Vonage service. They had to come out to my house a technician to unplug my old phone service from the dmark box because I was not getting a dial tone on every phone in the house. so they did that. And everything is fine with the phone service itself. but my kilobytes per second are really dropping off for my upload and download speed. I'm on comcast and I have cable modem. My upload speed is 330 k per second and my down lod is 512 k per second . Before I installed Vonage I was getting at least 750 k for both upload and download speeds I notice this when I go to download files from like divx.com or mp3's from Limewire. I never had an issue before installing Vonage. I do not want to get rid of Vonage. So I called my cable company and they said that they can see to my modem but not past it so any third party devices that are attached to the modem they can't see. They could see from my modem itself that I was getting great signal quality and even packets going back and fourth. So they have narrowed it down to a communication problem between Vonage and my modem. So what I have done so far, is I have purchased another cable modem. this one is the new Motorola sb5101 and it does support 2.0 for firmware. And it has standby mode which is good to keep hackers out which My old Modem which was a linksys (BEFCMU10) version 3 I do not have a router. The new modem says it does up to Windows xp, but I have Windows vista. The modem seems to be working fine so I'm not really worried about it. I also added a stand alone ethernet card in my system. The one I had was a Intel pro 10/100 desktop connection. It was built on to the mother board. I thought that I might get a little bit of speed increase with the stand alone which is a dlink DFE 530TX +PCIA and yes I got the update for it on windows update. I have my the blue ethernet cable going from the blue port of the Vonage device to the back of the cable modem. The blue cable is a cat 6. I have the yellow ethernet cable going from the yellow port on the Vonage device to the back of my computer The yellow cable is a cat cat 5 or cat 5 E I do not use a router as I said but maybe if I got one that would help regain some of my bandwidth. I may try switching the yellow cable which is only a cat 5 for a cat 6 to make both of them cat 6. Here are some of the tweaks and adjustments that I make. when I go into my network connections and hit properties on my ethernet card. I click on configure to my ethernet card and then the section where it says link line and duplex speed I change that from auto negotiation to 100 megabits full duplex mode. I choose that becuase I think that is the router setting even though my computer is not using a router but is using the Vonage device which acts like a router even though techniclly it is not. so Windows see's it as such. Also when I click on my local area network connection I uninstall client for Microsoft networks I do not need it where I'm on straight cable modem connection. I also disable qos Packet scheduler, But maybe I should keep that maybe who ever decides to respond to this could let me know this. Also I uninstall. File and print sharing for Microsoft networks. I can't disable internet protocol version 6 but I do uncheck it not sure if I should do this either. I also have the link layer topology mapper Io drivers uninstalled as well the only two I have in there are tcp 4 and 6 and I have 6 disabled so.when I click on ipv 4 I have obtain an Ip address automaticlly. I also have for the below Obtain dns server address automaticlly alternative configuration is automatic privte ip adress. when I click on advanced at the bottom Dhcp is enabled. At the bottom where it says automatic metric I take the check out of that box and have it set to 1 I heard that was better. for the dns. I have append primary and connection specific dns suffixes. I have the bullet in that. I also take the check out of append parent suffixes of the primary dns suffixe. At the bottom I take the check out of register this connections addresses in dns. Also the second one has no check in it which is use this connections dns suffix in dns registration. It seems a little faster with this configuration but maybe it is doing nothing. Also in the wins tab I have enable Lmhost lookup I do not have a check in that one either. And last the netbios setting I have instead of the default which is use netbios from the dhcp server. If static Ip address is used, or the dhcp server does not provide net bios setting enable netbios over tcpip. So I have the bullet in disable netbios over tcpip. so I'm stumped any help at all on increasing my bandwidth without overcapping I'm not looking to do that as I know it is illegal. Alos I have my voice mail setting turned off in Vonage so that might give me some bandwidth back also. I also have the bandwidth saver to normal audio so it is only using 30k instead of 90 which is maximum audio. I have aol 9.1, but was having this problem on aol 9.0 VR i use internet explorer also not firefox. I also have the setting in the advanced options for http1.1 that is enabled but so is http1.1 for proxy connections I'm not using a proxy. but my system keeps enabling that so. I keep it there. My next step is the router if you think that will help. or after that to have my friend run a new Line from outside a straight run from the drop to my house and shrink wrap it and make sure the cable is quad shielded so there is no breaks in the line or tears or RF SIGNAL leakage of any kind. That's if the router does not work. Has any one heard of something called Open dns. It's supoosed to make your internet faster. because it uses it own dns adresses you just have to type them in where it says use prefferred dns adresses. Well I wonder if this is compatabale with Vonage. That I may look up myself. But yes I use an anti virus avg free edition I also use spyware blaster spybot search and destroy and also adaware 2007. Also ccleaner and also System mechanic full version Hijack this. and remove it pro. I have not done any of my services tweaks yet so I will see what happens there also

Well thanks so much for listening! I hope I can get a solution somebody that can just tell me all the things that could be robbing my bandwidth. I just want to get all I can out of My 57 dollars a month for comcast broadband is all.

Thanks Steve

Steve,

Lots of information here, but I have to say much of it probably isn't relevant to any performance issues with the speed you get from your Cable modem.

Most of what you have done from a troubleshooting perspective I would not expect to help in any way.

First you need to read the sticky post at the top of this form and post this information. This will let people see how your network is setup and allow them to give you some things to try.

A few things off the top of my head just so you have them.

1. The specs on your computer don't matter (especially since you had the same computer before and afterwards)

2. I would not bother with the new network card, it should make no difference. (most, if not all network cards these days have 10+ times the throughput than your cable modem does so they are almost never the bottleneck)

3. You describe your speed from cable as being 750k up and down before. This sounds really slow for down speed, especially if you are paying $50 a month as you mention. So I think maybe what you are describing here is what you actually get from a certain site which can be misleading because the limit may be on that site or other factors.

Here is what I would do to try and help people on this site help you.

1. Read this post and answer the questions in it. Without this information, people here will not be able to help you.
http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic7191.html

2. Try things with and without Vonage in place, most importantly the speed test that is noted in the post above. If you see a large difference with the Vonage device in place then this is something to look at.

3. Regardless of the setup many people on this site recommend using a separate router for their internet connections. People often say that the Vonage devices are good phone devices, but poor routers.

Hopefully if you post the information needed from #1, people will be able to give you some help.

Steve,

Can you post the same test results with Vonage in place and also describe your network as it mentiones in the post?
