Greetings, here is as much of the requested info as I could find:

1. Indiana (Central)
2. Comcast cable internet
3. I get the 4meg package, but of course, with my Vonage router hooked up, I have no speed at all, so I'm not sure what you need here.
4. Terayon TJ715x
5. RTP300
6. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC (Currently, it is just Modem---->PC, of course.)
7. I have no connection at all, and no phone service. It went out around 3:00AM last night.
8. I can't seem to run that test. I assume it doesn't work since I don't have the Vonage router currently connected?

In any case, like I said, I have no connection. The "Power" light comes on, and the "Ethernet" lights come on, but the "Phone" light never does, and the "Internet" light flashes intermitantly.

I have tried resetting it a dozen times, unplugging it for several minutes and plugging it back in, I've gone to into the Admin panel (At the Default Gateway IP address. I don't know if I'm "supposed" to go in there, but I'm kind of a computer geek, and a DIYer, so I fiddled around.) and reset the "Factory settings", nothing seems to work.

One thing I did notice, is that the DHCP table in the "Administration" tab of the Admin panel is all blank. I seem to recall that it used to have info there, but I'm not 100% sure. I tried the "DHCP Release" and "DCHP Renew" buttons, but again, no dice.

Anyway, I am understandably anxious to get full connectivity back, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Aha, I discovered that I didn't have Java installed, thus causing the failure of the speed test. Having remedied that, here are my results:

Enter the RTP300 GUI. Go to Basic, Clone Mac Address, Enable, Clone, Save settings.

You'll be copying the mac address of the computer's NIC to the WAN portion of the Vonage router, so that the cablemodem assigns an IP to it. Standard procedure with Cable b/c of how they deal with long DHCP lease times.

Ha! Success!

Thanks, Blackjack, that worked perfectly.

Do you have any idea why I haven't had to do that before? I've had Vonage for about 1.5 years now with no problems, and it just keeled over in the middle of the night last night. I haven't made any hardware changes in months.

Regardless, it works now, so I'm happy.

Thanks again! Very Happy

Interesting. I'm running the same modem you are, with Brighthouse Cable. I've had both an RTP300 and a VT2442, and I've never had to enable cloning.

Blackjack, your thoughts?

There are two main reasons for needing to clone a MAC.

The first one is the one I mentioned about long lease times for dynamic IPs, and the most obvious one is ISP-level restrictions. If you go over most ISPs terms of service they do not allow multiplexing of a single public IP into several private ones by natting, with a proxy server or however you want to do it. This is usually enforced by registering the MAC of the first device the modem is plugged into (usually PC's NIC). The modem will refuse to hand out an IP to any other MAC after that one, either till lease time is up or until you call your ISP and register the MAC (or clone it :p).

Ben, I'm thinking that you had already done this and you don't remember, and in the process of restoring factory defaults or a faulty firmware push it got resetted. That's why it still worked hooked up directly into the PC, that MAC was already registered.

Steve, Brighthouse may not be filtering in your particular area. These restrictions are becoming more common tho. A few months ago Comcast didn't requiere you to clone your MAC, but since the Adelphia takeover MAC registration is more and more common.

So, all in all, there's three reasons why you may or may not need to clone your MAC: location, ISP, modem.

With DSL short lease times this is not usally a problem. The only time I had to clone a MAC was with a bridged Westell modem with Verizon DSL. Also, most DSL providers nowadays have smart modems which can dial out (as oppossed to dumb modems which cannot be NAT'd) si it's the modem that gets the public IP, not the router.

Thanks. We haven't had to recommend MAC cloning much. It sounds as if it might be more of a problem going forward. Do you think that Ben could have also solved his problem by just powering down for a few hours and then making his RTP300 the first thing that attempted to connect to it?

If it was a modem-imposed restriction and if the lease time was up during that time, then yes. But that's a lot of ifs.

And it certainly is a problem going forward and my guess is that it will become much, much more common every time.

ISPs will outright deny it though. I was helping a friend install a GL router and just for the sake of proving my point I called Comcast to "register the mac address". They said they didn't need it as they don't require mac activation. I waited until lease expired, plugged everything in. It did not work, so I used the mac clone service that comes with Linksys routers and that got us up and running.

Thanks for the explanation, the more I understand about the way it works, the better. I appreciate it very much.
