I'm beginning to think linksys makes junk that self destructs. My WRTP54G was going intermittent and I thought it was comcast or Vonage. Replaced the mot cable modem - no connectivity. Replaced the router and back up.

First things first. I hate Vonage. I was their most staunch supporter 2 1/2 years ago when I signed up. I even convinced friends and relatives to switch to Vonage. And I scored free service for doing so.

I have the faulty router/firmware in question, and have spoken with tech support at length about this issue. They're useless. Their supervisors are useless. I am cancelling my service as soon as Clearwire makes Voip available in my area (Dayton, OH). I have tried every trick suggested by you all and none of it works. I do appreciate all the time and effort you guys have expended in trying to help other Vonage users, but the bottom line is that we are using an inferior product supported by imbeciles. And here is the good news (insert sarcasm here)...they won't refund me my money for the time my router has been infected with their defective firmware. Yes, you heard me. They won't refund me the money I have paid. They're thieves. Criminals. If I knew anything about building a website ( I don't...) I would build a website called www.IHateVonage.com . Feel free to steal that from me. I hereby give you all permission. I claim no copyright. As long as one of you can properly relay the hate, anger, pain, and anguish I have for Vonage on the website, it's all yours.

Happy VoIP'ing. I will now begin my new campaign to tell everyone I can how terrible Vonage is. Hopefully, within a year or two, they'll be out of business and I can go back to leading a normal life. Sorry if I end up inconveniencing any of you. You're all great people. But the world needs to be rid of vile, corrupt companies such as Vonage. You'll be OK. I promise that once I wipe them off the face of the Earth, others will pop up in their place. It's a capitalist market. Competition rules. The weak will die and the strong will survive. It's just a shame we had to deal with Vonage in the meantime.

Now I just have to decide which of the four horsemen I want to call myself.....

PostPosted: Thu Oct 18, 2007 9:49 pm    Post subject: My experience with 5.01.04 push to WRTP54G and tech support Reply with quote Back to top

I was justed pushed 5.01.04 (western PA) yesterday. The issue presented as an power loop. Internet on PC connected to router works fine for 15 sec, then "local network disconnected", then works fine, repeat. Lights on router front also cycle. All on, then power light blinks, then all router lights off except blinking power, then all back on.

Called tech support who tried to hard reset device and force it back to 1.00.62, but it would not take the new (old) firmware. Lev 2 support said aware of issue with new firmware and WRTP54G, but power loop cycle was abnormal and that usually they usually will take old firmware.

Offered $40 credit, I complained, calmly arguing it was their firmware that fried the router, nothing I did, and they agree to send replacement (exchange). Lev 2 Tech support seemed knowledgeable and was curteous. I expect new one, free of charge, to arrive in 2 business days. I am supposed to return the fried one. Tech support insisted that many with new firmware have no problems and did not expect problem to recur with new device even though it WILL update itself to latest firmware on first connection.

What does everyone think, is this what anyone else experienced? Is the problem likely to recur after the normal install of new device or should I call them back before plugging in the new one? I REALLY cannot afford the downtime if this happens again.

Thanks.

Don't do it man. They offered me the same deal. I refused. I currently have the router working with skycraper's advice (earlier in this post, page 7 I believe). But the way they word it is if they send you the replacement router, their obligation is fulfilled. If this new router takes a giant **** on you, hey, not their fault. They told me it was a free, ONE-TIME out of warranty replacement. When you press them on the issue, i.e., what happens if the new router goes sideways, they will NOT commit to replacing the new router. So, conceivably, you're left with two paperweights, one of which you have to send back. I would try to get another, different router out of them. I tried, unsuccessfully. But you never know, with their inconsistent customer service, you might strike gold with one of them. Good luck, and may the schwartz be with you.

I used to have this router (I changed a couple of days ago), I was terrible. I'm get to the conclusion, that is better, to haver your our router, and the, their phone adaptor, so they can only touch the phone adaptor, so is something bad happend, so still have your router for surf the net, o connect another phone adapter for another company o someting else.

Anyway.. if you can excange your router for a different model, do it.

Thanks for the comments. Suprisingly, Vonage is not sending me another WRTP54G to replace the fried one. The said they would not expect a new WRTP54G to be a problem as this issue is isolated to a small percentage of those who got pushed the new firmware. However, surprisingly the confirmation e-mails says:

Item Quantity Unit Subtotal
*******************************************************************
Motorola VT2542 1 $99.99 $0.00
------------------------------------
Shipping: $0.00
------------------------------------
Total: $0.00

So I'm cautiously happy. We'll see in a few days. Anyone aware of specific issues with the Motorola VT2542? Didn't see any major issues on these forums?

Thanks.

Just got my push at about 0900 CDT this morning. I can't believe they're still forcing out that botched up 5.04.01 FW.

Spent 3 hours w/ level 1. then I found this forum and called back and immediately went to level 2.

I have the exact symptoms described above. Infinite repeat of router boot sequence at about 20 second intervals. Won't take a hard reset. Can't connect to it long enough to re-flash. Only thing they said that was new was if I could get to the Admin portion if the router browser, then to the defaults page, then click the two reset to factory boxes, and save before it restarted it would go back to the old firmware. (I'll tell you now, that is the worst video game EVAR...!)

They are sending me a new Motorola unit and I have to send back the old one. They better include postage for the old one or I'll be working my way up to level three.

Lol... I tried a few times to do that too. Thought I could beat it, but it's physically impossible to login and click 2 screens to hit reset before the 20 sec loop kills the connection.

I agree with you about shipping but couldn't bring myself to wait on hold for the $4 shipping charge. The don't include it automatically provide a return label in the RMA. Would suggest others ask for this up front with level 2 support when they offer the motorola replacement.

I'm happy with the new VT2542 and had no probs configuring it for printing/backup routines and port forwarding for my wireless webcams. Hopefully they won't fry this one too.

This is a work around but it does seem to work, as long as you don't care about wireless.

Step 1.Disable the wireless portion on the router.

That's it.

I had all the same problems. Now that I disabled wireless, the problem is gone.

What I have read is that this version of the router does not have enough free memory to support the new firmware. So disabling the wireless frees up memory for the new firmware. I have been running trouble free for over a month now.

Hope it helps.

Vonage does not send out linksys routers.so if ever a customer asks for a replacement on their linksys wrt54g,they will receive a motorola vt2542..its a wireless router..so far i haven't heard any issues regarding the vt2542..though it is harder to configure that the linksys, because of its router interface..but i think its better than linksys
