OK.
Vonage
finally uploaded the previous version of the firmware back onto my router. I followed their instructions to also reboot the cable modem as well as the router. I haven't had a crash since.
Now it could have been the firmware of the router or me rebooting the cable modem ...
There seem to be 2 different firmwares one for the router factory defaults and another one for the voice factory defaults. I have never seen the router firmware version change away from 1.00.62.
For me the problem was really frequent and at one time I was looking over to the router at the right moment and observed the power light going into repetitive double blinking followed by the router loosing power entirely for a split second. It would reboot and reconnect to the internet, but wouldn't restore the phone line.
I hope it was the firmware change. If somebody wants to try rebooting the cable modem to see what happens?! If that doesn't fix it you should go online and request the previous firmware to be loaded back to you router.
I will let you know in case the problem should come back.

Post subject: Same problem here too...
Thanks everyone for posting about this issue.
I am still having the exact same problem as of 12:20 a.m. on Sept 16, 2007. Before I found this thread I was wondering WTH was going on.
I'm running my home network (internet access) through an OLD, Linksys router I had lying around with no problems. So it is definitely the WRTP54G that is the problem. Glad I kept this old one.
Shome, please let us know if your router automatically downloaded the new (crappy) firmware after
Vonage
re-installed the previous version for you. I'm certainly willing to call
Vonage
to have them roll back the firmware to the previous version, but I wonder what's going to keep the router from just automatically overwriting what they install manually with the new version after a couple hours?
Thanks again.

For everyone reading this thread. As I stated before it is the firmware that is causing these problems. It's not your ISP. I'm using Charter, my dad is using Comcast, and my brother is using Time Warner. All the same problems with the same router.
Vonage
needs to wake up and fix this!

I'm having the same problem as everyone else. I spoke with a tech support person in India, and told him that many people with WRTP54G routers are having problems with the firmware updates. The tech support person upgraded the firmware on my router to version 5.01.04 on Thursday night. Before the upgrade my router was dropping its Internet connection every two hours. After the upgrade everything seemed to be okay until this morning. The router has dropped its connection twice today over about 12 hours, and I have to press the reset button and reconfigure all my settings from scratch to get things working again. Very frustrating. Is anyone from
Vonage
reading these posts?

Called and they pushed back the stable firmware.
If you have a problem, call
Vonage
and they will do so.

Thanks. Does the stable firmware that they roll the router back to just get overwritten by the newer (defective) firmware though? Or does the previous firmware seem to stick?

I thought about it after hanging up the phone (it was level 2 guy that put back the old firmware).
It had been sticking for the past 24 hour now.
I am having my fingers crossed.

Post subject: Looks like they pulled back 5.01.04
I was still having the problem last night (Saturday). They sent me a message back that basically said it couldn't be the firmware and gave me a long list of instructions to folllow that I am pretty sure won't help. Anyway, after all that it looks like they pulled back the crappy firmware (5.01.04) because everything is working now and has since last night and I am seeing version 1.00.62 again when I log in to the router.

I can confirm. I have been on 1.00.62 for approx. 14 hours now without
Vonage
automatically updating to the bad firmware. I think
Vonage
has realized they screwed something up. Hopefully
Vonage
will do additional testing of future firmware updates before they release them.

Thanks a lot for the confirmation andunn27.
I'll hook my WRTP back up and give
Vonage
a call now to roll back the faulty FW that is now installed on it.
MisterVA, that's hilariaous how they told you "it couldn't possibly be the firmware." Hah!
