PostPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2007 2:58 pm    Post subject: VT2442, laptop, and Sprint Mobile Broadband - how to set up? Reply with quote Back to top

Ok, I just got my Vonage stuff the other day. I am fairy proficient with computers, but this is kicking my butt! I have wireless broadband through Sprint. When I ordered, I didn't see anything that said I could not use this with Vonage, so I am assuming that it is possible. I have searched and searched, but really haven't figured this out yet. Do I need to have the SoftPhone instead??

Here are my stats:

1. Your location - Platte City, MO

2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Sprint mobile broadband

3. Upload and download speeds:
Download speed: 521504 bps
Upload speed: 211176 bps

4. Modem make and model - Sprint Pantech wireless card

5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 - VT2442

6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
Ethernet from laptop to Vonage adapter, phone cord from adapter to phone

7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc
No dial tone.

8. Run this Voip Test: After the test has fully completed, in the Advanced Tab, click on "View Text" in the lower right hand corner. Copy-N-Paste that data into your post.

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 521504 bps
Upload speed: 211176 bps
Quality of service: 98 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 70 ms
Average download pause: 22 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 169 ms
Average round trip time to server: 403 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 15.8 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.9 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 3
Estimated MOS score: 3.8

I would really appreciate some help here, but please explain in like I am a 2 year old! LOL

What color/activity in the VT2442 lights?

Do you know the IP address for the VT2442?
Can you ping the VT2442?
Can you login to the VT2442 (username: router, password: router)?
What is the status info on the main page after login?

I did a cmd prompt and this is what it says:

Ethernet Adapter local area connection - IP address = 192.168.15.2

How do I ping it?

Yes, I can log in.

Status info:

Status Information
System Uptime: 1 hours 10 minutes

LAN: Connected
WAN: Disconnected
NA
Software Version: 11.1.0-r060216-0.6.0 -r7
Voice Status: Provisioning failed

Edited, because I forgot to post the light colors!

The power light is green and flashy, the Ethernet 1 light is green and steady, and that is all the lights that are on. If I pick up the handset, the Phone 1 light flashes green.

First you need to know the ip address of your Vonage device (You can find this out by going through your router). Once you know that you go back to the cmd window and at the prompt type ping 000.00.00.000 (put the ip address for your Vonage device in place of my zeros).

If I understand your setup properly, you get internet service to the laptop via a wireless card, and you're trying to pass it on to the Vonage box via an ethernet card. If this is correct and you can get, or borrow, a computer with wired ethernet, plug it in to the port on the laptop into which you're currently plugging the VT2442. If that computer gets internet service that way, you should be able to get the Vonage setup to work. If it can't, then you need to figure out why and fix it.

Yes, you are correct in the way I am setting it up. However, I know the Ethernet port works because I can use it to get on the internet at school. So, I don't know what I need to do to get it to work at my office without having wired Internet.

The issue isn't whether the ethernet card is functional. At home you connect wirelessly, and I presume that at school you do not connect wirelessly, but instead plug the ethernet card into a wired service? If that's correct, it means that both cards are working, but it does not mean that you are getting service via one card and passing it alone via the other. That requires that your computer is set up properly to bridge the internet connection. That's why I suggested the test that I did. Once you know that the laptop is set up properly to bridge the internet connection, then we can troubleshoot the Vonage setup.

OK, I did try to bridge the connections, but I don't have that option, because the wireless card is set up as a modem... I could attach a picture of my network folder if you'd like?
