i just had a word with the Vonage customer service this afternoon regarding my dropped calls that ended with a busy signal, and modem needed being reset. he told me to put my QoS setting at 90, being that the default setting was too high. the only ill side effect is that when im on the phone the DL & UL speeds go way down (almost unusable at all)

You know, this is really beginning to piss me off.. I have to run servers and stuff here and a stupid router that keeps crashing over and over -- not to mention it's doing this while PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO USE THE PHONE too now.. and instead of just resetting/unplugging the router, I have to unplug everything, wait a few mins, and plug back in.. hoping it'll work.

I'm having the same problem. FW for my RT31P2 was upgraded (to 1.27.01) by someone here not long ago. I'm on business-class Road Runner (5Mbps/512Kbps). I have tried all three options in the Bandwidth Saver settings, and currently have QoS set to 512.

My wife notices the problem on the phone - usually half an hour to fourty-five minutes into the conversation the line will 'go funny', and then drop. If she or the other party tries to call right back the call does not go through.

I notice it most with FTP traffic. While at work and attempting to move files back and forth (which I do A LOT of), my FTP session will drop and I'll be unable to reconnect for a couple minutes.

There was a post a couple back about removing the QoS setting, so I'll try that, although it makes me a little nervous. My NNTP server saturates my connection (and FTP comes close), and if I start transfers while she's on the phone, I don't want her call quality to drop.

I also have other network services running through the RT31P2...

Quick follow-up... QoS settings appear to have no bearing on my disconnect issue. I queued up about 200MB to pull via FTP from home, and I still got disconnected and was unable to immediately resume. My Linksys does have the phaser sound issue. Maybe it's time to replace it since some folks have reported no noise with new units.

I had the same exact issue so no need to repost the symptoms. After trying everything under the sun, Vonage finally sent me a replacement that worked. I've used Linksys products for years, and I've always had a good impression of them--good value for the money. But these RT31P2 units are pure junk. Their quality control on these things must be a joke, and even if you get one that works, some of the firmware features are pretty limited.

You'll have to spend an hour on the phone, but if you can get them to exchange it, ask for overnight shipping. They did that for me at no charge, but I had to request it.

From the threads in this forum, one might get the impression that disconnects, for whatever reason, are normal, standard operating proceedures.

Also considered normal is excessively long times on hold, waiting to get inconsistent tech help.

The plain words precicely describing this situation are S****y Service.

When I've had bad experiences in the past, they've always been isolated incidents. But Vonage truly has the worst customer service I've ever experienced on a consistent basis.

That said, they are pretty quick to credit your account if you can get a person on the phone and let them know you're dissatisfied.

Just in the last two months, their reputation has taken a huge hit. I checked out this forum before I signed up and I knew there were some issues to be dealt with, but for the most part, people were satisfied with what they were getting from Vonage, and confident that things would only improve.

If I were visiting these forums again today as a prospective customer, there's absolutely no way I'd take the plunge again.

I feel like I'm stuck in a bad marriage, and I've just invested too much into making this relationship work to throw it all away just yet. But my eye is starting to wander....

When I finally reached someone (about half an hour), I voiced two concerns: 'white' noise in the background and frequent disconnects.

The support person was very quick to admit there was a problem with the RT31P2 and offered to exchange it. In regards to dropped calls, he asked for a four hour Ping Plotter data file to Yahoo (also provided data to Google) along with a speed test from DSLReports...

I'm really hoping the new device fixes my connection issues too.

I forgot to ask about overnight shipping, but I did request a return shipping label for the 'bad' unit.

*nod* I just called, after an hour of waiting, they updated the firmware to 1.27 (finally) -- and now I'm waiting for the guy to check into another issue I've been having with 800 numbers for a few mail order places not going through and just ringing and ringing while they work on non Vonage lines.

I got the disconnection and resetting problem sorted out on my linksys rt31p2 by placing an external computer fan on top of the router. Ive got 2 other linksys routers running a befsr81 and wrt54g and have had no problem at all with these units. It seems to me that when the rt31p2 overheats it resets itself and comes back running after 3 minutes or so. Vonage emailed me the rt31p2 is defective and will have it replaced. Have not received it though. Im still using old linksys rt31p2 with the external fan. SO far no disconnections for the past 2 weeks
