I just finished setting up Vonage for the whole house. It works great! I love being able to use my existing phones and phone jacks!
I thought I'd share what I had to do, since others may have the same situation.
I had two Telco lines coming into my house, we'll call them 44 and 47, where 44 is the main line (or Line 1) throughout my house.
I have an alarm system that was hard wired into my phone system on 44.
I wanted to replace 44 with Vonage and keep 47 with Telco (for faxing and for use by my alarm system).
So, I couldn't just disconnect 44 from Telco, I had to also move the alarm phone wires over to 47.
Rather than have the alarm guy come out and charge me a hundred dollars or more to rewire it, I figured I'd take a stab at it myself.
The way the wires were set up on 44 was as follows: there was one set of wires (red & green) going from my alarm box to 44 on the telco interface. There were two sets of wires (going to the rest of the house) (each set having one blue wire & one blue/white wire), these were connected to black and yellow wires going into my alarm box.
For 47, there were two sets of wires going from the Telco interface to to the rest of the house, (each set having one orange wire & one orange/white wire).
The first thing I did was follow the instructions on Vonage's website about disconnecting your Telco interface box from the Telco lines coming into the house. I cut the wires that were connected from 44 to the alarm box at the point where they were crimped together. I disconnected the wires going from the alarm box to the 44 line on the Telco interface. I diconnnected the wires going from the house to the 47 line on the Telco interface. I crimped together the black and yellow wires with the orange & orange/white wires that go to the rest of the house (for line 47). I connected the red & green wires from the alarm box to the 47 line Telco interface. I connected the blue & blue/white wires to the Telco box for line 44.
I connected a cord from the Vonage network adapter to a wall jack for line 1 (44) throughout my house.
Line 1 (44) is now Vonage throughout my house. Line 2 (47) is a Telco line still run throughout my house and has the alarm connected to it.
I called my alarm company to put the system in test mode. I tested it. I verified with the alarm company that they got a call, which the did!
So, I'm up and running!
Hope this info can be of use to someone. Please remember, your setup may be different from mine, so just because this worked for me, doesn't mean it will work for you. You need to have a basic understanding of phone wiring before you should attempt this yourself. |
