PostPosted: Sun Sep 09, 2007 11:00 pm    Post subject: Calls drop after 30 seconds--Linksys WRTP54g and cable modem Reply with quote Back to top

I'm using a cable modem (Motorola Surfboard) with a Linksys WRTP54G wireless router attached and am having trouble with dropped calls--the line drops after an average of 30 seconds. Longest I've gone is 8 min before unexpected call drop; however, there is sometimes no dial tone or line drops even before I've finished dialing. I have tried this with both a wired phone and a cordless (5.8) phone plugged into the Phone 1 port, and it happened with both.

Internet seems to be working fine as far as I can tell (pages are loading, etc.)

Results of Voip speed test:
Speed test statistics

Download speed: 492536 bps
Upload speed: 244816 bps
Quality of service: 98 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 46 ms
Average download pause: 22 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 78 ms
Average round trip time to server: 84 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 9.1 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 357.6 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 1.6 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 1.3 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 4
Estimated MOS score: 3.2

I'd appreciate any ideas you might have--i'm going nuts trying to fix it. Thanks.

Excessive jitter (357.6ms) is what's causing your calls to drop. Jitter is defined as follows, "the variation in time between data packets sent and packets arriving caused by network difficulties such as route changes, congestion, packet loss, traffic regulators etc., and plays a major role in the quality of a Voip call. Excessive jitter occurs when the time delay is too long (high latency) and packets arrive outside the time window and get lost from the call (discarded). As a result, the recomposed sound no longer reflects exactly what was sent, and depending of the extent of the delay may not be understandable by the recipient."

Even though your internet appears to be working, excessive latency will affect voice quality with Voip. Remove your WRTP54G from your setup and connect your cable modem directly to your PC and re-run the Voip speed test. This will help to determine if it's the Vonage device that's causing the excessive jitter or your internet connection itself. It's a good idea to use more than one test site so you can compare your results. The following link is an alternative test site you can use to compare your results. http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/

I removed the router and have tried several times to run the Voip speed test but each time Internet Explorer crashes--I'm getting the "has encountered errors and needs to close" message. I will try the alternative site you gave me, but, any idea why? Does it have anything to do with the fact that the Voip is contained in the router which is now out of the circuit (cable modem plugs directly into PC?)

You should not be receiving that error message just because you removed your WRTP54G from the setup...There may be an issue with the Voip speed test itself. Delete your temporary internet files, delete your cookies and clear your history. Shut down your computer and then unplug the power source to the cable modem. After a couple of minutes have passed, restart your computer, allowing it time to get back to the desktop and then plug the power source back in to your cable modem and then try to run the test.

I cleared everything as suggested and reran the test, with the same result. Now I have no idea what to try.

I have a call in to my ISP to come check the line--I'm hoping it's that, rather than the router. I live very far from where I bought the router and I'm not sure I can take it back.

Did you try to run the test from the other site I provided? http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/

Yes, I tried both. Same result, even with clearing history etc. before each attempt.

I don't understand why you're not able to access the Voip speed test on this site or from the other site I gave you when previously you were able to.

Alright, try these site and use "Boston" as the call destination. http://testyourvoip.com/

I don't either. There was no hint of trouble the first time I tried the Voip test, but it hasn't worked since.

Tried the third website, with the router removed from the circuit--the test worked fine--here are the results:
