Thanks much. I never had come across that link. Looks simple enough.
I found a pre-owened router that I was told has never been used or assigned a number. I have been unable to find a new one local to my Texas home, so I guess I might take a chance on that one. |

Which is mighty strange, to me. In my opinion, Vonage makes life difficult for itself by offering a wide variety of adapters rather than sticking with their basic mission of providing phone service. Since they do offer all the different devices, you'd think that they would welcome requests from established customers to buy them. |

One would think so. I guess they don't think logically like you and I. Perhaps even offering an equipment discount to a current customer with a contract renewal. At least the option. But to just say sorry we won't send you a new device since you are already a customer is just mind blowing really. |

I use Vonage in Brazil most of the time, and am also concerned about the possibility of my ATA crapping out. I bought another on a recent visit to Canada as a backup.
You could also explore Vonage Talk, which would at least enable you to make outgoing Vonage calls via your PC in an emergency (and calls to Vonage support). However, most people report that incoming PSTN calls can't be received this way.
I also keep a Sipura (now Linkys) ATA hanging around so I can quickly set up accounts with other providers that allow a bring-your-own-device approach. This is my backup if I run into serious Vonage problems. Callcentric and similar services are good for this sort of thing. If Vonage box breaks you can forward Vonage to another number and make calls through that service. |
