I'm using a Motorola VT-2142 from Vonage, and a Thomson Speedtouch 516 for ADSL. I'm currently in the Azores. I've setup Vonage, and the Voip works just fine. So does the internet... sort of.
Vista doesn't seem to play nice with the Motorola router. The way it's setup, the router dials through the ADSL modem to PPoE with my username and password, and the computer is getting it's connection from the router. Vista thinks it's offline all the time, even while I'm surfing on the internet. Most webpages come up ok, but some random ones (Like to access a credit card account website) prompt a Vista pop-up asking me to connect to the Broadband connection with my username and password. It then says Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPoE). It never actually works though.
I don't believe it's SSL prompting this re-dial, because I can access my bank's site just fine. Is there a way to tell Vista to leave me alone and that I'm already on the internet? I get this situation in both IE and Firefox. Any suggestions? |

When using DSL/PPPoE connections, I've noticed that I often have to lower the MTU setting or else some websites don't work. I have mine set to 1454 or else I can't get to cnn.com or a few other sites though most others work. You should be able to change this by logging into your router. I'm not familiar with your router specifically. You can find an optimal MTU setting by reviewing the information at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5793 -- Don't change the MTU in your registry though; change it in the router.
The websites that don't come up may be leading Vista to believe that it's offline. First, make sure that in Internet Explorer under the File menu, "Work Offline" is NOT checked. Also, in the Internet Explorer settings, go to the Connections tab and make sure that there are no dial-up connections set up there. If they are, then delete them. The option to Never Dial a connection should be selected (it might be greyed out). Firefox has a Work Offline option at the same place as well. |

vista has given problems like this to most Vonage routers...most other routers as well.............assign a static IP on ur pc in the Vonage network..like 192.168.15.100 or something (last octect up to 254); and disable the IPv6 and I believe you'll see this problem resolved; this seems to be a vista - issue, and if you call Vonage tech the above is what they will recommend to resolve the issue |
