Call forwarding is a free option with Vonage, but Vonage does frown on you continuously call forwarding and simuring.

What is the problem you are having with your Vonage?

That's news to me. Why would Vonage offer customers these services and then "frown on" those who decide to use them? I would imagine many people who take advantage of simulring would want to leave it on permanently so they can answer at either phone.

I guess you never read the Terms of Service, here is the excerpt. You can read the whole thing in the package you were sent or even on line.
http://vonage.ca/features_terms_service.php

2.2 Residential Use of Service and Device. If you subscribe to Vonage's residential services, the Service and the Device are provided to you solely for residential use. You shall not resell or transfer the Service or the Device to another party without our prior written consent. You are prohibited from using the Service or the Device for auto-dialing, continuous or extensive call forwarding, telemarketing (including charitable or political solicitation or polling), fax or voicemail broadcasting or fax or voicemail blasting. We reserve the right to immediately disconnect or modify your Service if we determine, in our sole and absolute discretion, that your use of the Service or the Device is, or at any time was, inconsistent with normal residential usage patterns. In addition, you will be required to pay our higher rates for commercial service for all periods in which your use of the Service or the Device was inconsistent with normal residential use.

I haven't read the terms of service for four years. That's when I became a Vonage customer.

I see nothing about simulring in the section you posted.

Now that I am curious I decided to call Vonage and ask customer service whether I could leave my call forwarding or simulring on for as long as I wish. They assured me there is no problem, but reminded me that when calls are forwarded they will be counted against my 500 minutes because I am not on the unlimited plan. I informed the customer service rep about the clause in the agreement cited above and he assured me it was not meant to deter residential customers from using call fowarding or simulring as often or as much as they liked.

Call again tomorrow and ask that question and you will get another answer.

It is in the TOS for a reason. You are correct SimulRing isn't listed there, that was my error. I am not sure if a SimuRing call is counted against your minute.

Since you are on the 500 minute plan you should try the Vonage Talk and they don't count against your outgoing minutes.

Your Vonage Talk suggestion is interesting, although I seldom go anywhere near my 500 minutes. Until know I haven't paid much attention to Vonage Talk.

I just checked it out, and I'm a little confused. Can I use it to make calls to regular phones (not just Vonage numbers) from my existing Vonage account? Can I register using Vonage Talk and my Vonage ATA at the same time? I'd be interesting in using Vonage Talk while I'm on the road, with my notebook and regular Vonage number, if it is possible. Then I could make and receive calls when I'm not around my regular Vonage phone. Or am I barking up the wrong tree here?

You can make calls to any number including non-vonage numbers.

All is required is to download software, have a headset or usb phone.

Some people can receive calls on this, but I cant. I believe the reason why I cant is because I removed 011username from the simulring on the Vonage page. Sign into Vonage talk using your Vonage user name and password, then go to the Vonage page and check out the simuring, don't remove the 011username or click on the enable button, otherwise you wont be able to receive calls on it.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Even without incoming it would be useful. I sometimes use Vonage in Canada, sometimes in Brazil. And I often travel.
