Post subject: Home Network with 4 PCs, VT2142 and D-Link DI-604
Hello,
Apologies if this has been addressed many times, but I'm a newbie to
Vonage
and I'd just like to confirm what I think is going on before I go out and purchase extra stuff.
My configuration looks exactly like this:
http://mysite.verizon.net/lmilliner/setup.jpg
Vonage
router = VT2142
Existing router = D-Link DI-604
PCs B, C and D (XP) currently have IPs of 192.168.0.102, 103 and 104 (subnet 192.168.0.1) and are set to obtain the IP and DNS addresses automatically (before
Vonage
they were static but a
Vonage
tech suggested I change that).
PC A (Vista) used to be static 192.168.0.101 but after plugging in
Vonage
and changing IP/DNS to automatic, it is now 192.168.15.2 (IPv4 Address) with a default gateway of 192.168.15.1.
Before
Vonage
, all 4 PCs could see each other and share files and printers. Now, only B, C and D can see each other -- but all 4 can access the internet and the phone works fine. Am I correct in thinking that my current setup is like Option 1 at
http://
vonage
.nmhoy.net/tworouters.html?
A tech at Verizon told me to just remove the yellow cable from A, but then I get no dial tone. When I log into the
Vonage
router, I see where I can change its subnet address. But that wouldn't be a good idea, right? I've added 192.168.15.* to all firewalls, still no luck.
For all the PCs to "see" each other again, should I attempt to emulate Option 3 at
http://
vonage
.nmhoy.net/tworouters.html? Which
Vonage
router would be best for that? Or can I just use a hub with the VT2142? If so, are there disadvantages to using a hub? Any other ideas?
Many thanks!

You're correct on all points, but I don't know if a hub will work well. If you happen to have one on hand, by all means give it a try. If you have to buy hardware to get what you need, then you might consider using your existing
Vonage
box and getting a new primary router with more ports, or a second router configured like the
Vonage
box in Nate's configuration 3. Plug the fourth computer and your existing
Vonage
box into the new router.
If you want to use Nate's configuration 3 as shown, the VT2442 would probably be as good a choice as any.

hey steve48,
Thanks for the reply. Now I'm thinking about putting the VT2142 (
vonage
) IN FRONT of the DI-604 (existing router) and turning off VT2142's DHCP. Anyone have comments or advice on that?
If I'm successful, I'll let you know
Gotta wait until 3 in the morning so I don't interrupt roommate's phone calls (god forbid)!

First of all, changing from static to dhcp (as the
Vonage
tech suggested) would not have made a difference, you could have stuck with static IPs all around.
What's happening is you have two dhcp servers running (the one in the DLink and the one in the VT2142). Your 4th PC is grabbing its IP address from the Motorola and is having it's gateway assigned to the Motorola instead of the D-Link.
In order to get all 4 PCs to see each other again there are two ways to approach this:
Make all your PC's static IPs and hard code the Gateway IP address to 192.168.0.1 (or whatever you D-Link router's IP address is), and then go into the admin web server of the Motorola and turn off the DHCP server.
or if you want to stay with DHCP,
just go into the Motorola's admin screen and turn off the DHCP server, that will force ALL devices on the network to get their address from the D-Link router.

Ok - late replly here. But the best solution for an ATA is to be first link in the chain, which will also solve your network problems. The connection should be Modem>ATA>router. DHCP enabled on both devices and your PCs should be configured for DHCP also. The 2142 will connect to the gateway of your modem. Doesn't matter what it's IP is. The router ip will most likey be assigned as 192.168.15.2 - but also doesn't matter. THe 4 ports of the router will most likely be 192.168.1.2, .3, .4, and .5. (if the GW of the router is 192.168.1.1 THat will enable all PCs to se each other with DHCP in play, and also give you ATA first crack at bandwidth, giving you the best chance at good quality voice duplexing.
modem>2142 wan.
2142lan>router wan
router LAN>PC1, PC2, PC3 PC4
Unplug powers, activate Modem, then ATA then router. If needed reboot the PCs or do an IP release/renew on each.
