1. Your location: Chester, VA (804 area code)
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Comcast Workplace Enhanced
3. Upload and download speeds 23MB down / 2.3MB up
4. Modem make and model / SMC 8014
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 - MOTOROLA VT1005
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC: Modem --> Vonage
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc: Choppy audio, garbled audio, no audio
8. Run this Voip Test: After the test has fully completed, in the Advanced Tab, click on "View Text" in the lower right hand corner. Copy-N-Paste that data into your post.

Results of Voip test:

Speed test statistics

---------------------

Download speed: 25039744 bps

Upload speed: 2631216 bps

Quality of service: 53 %

Download test type: socket

Upload test type: socket

Maximum download pause: 9 ms

Average download pause: 1 ms

Minimum round trip time to server: 14 ms

Average round trip time to server: 16 ms

Voip test statistics

--------------------

Jitter: you --> server: 2.0 ms

Jitter: server --> you: 8.2 ms

Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %

Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %

Packet discards: 0.0 %

Packets out of order: 0.0 %

Number of supported Voip lines: 44

Estimated MOS score: 4.0

Whats the deal? Amazing bandwidth and no pacjet loss, and this thing says I can support up to 44 Voip lines - but 53% QoS?

Help!

We have been having issues with Vonage for a very long time - I've just been putting up with it, but now its worse than ever.

Thanks!

I never have understood why the QoS can sometimes be very low with ever other number very good. I'd call your test results stellar.

That leaves us with explaining what's wrong. I gather that you have no wireless routers or anything like that- just a wired connection from your modem to a VT1005, and then to your computer. Is that correct? Have you tried changing phones, preferably to a corded one if you're using cordless?

If you have a cooperative friend with a different broadband ISP, it would be very instructive to take your VT1005 to his/her place and try it there. That will establish whether the adapter is capable of providing good service.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I actually just upgraded to this huge amount of bandwidth, as I thought bandwidth was an issue with my problem. I have a wife and 2 kids, we all have our own computers, and we're all always online...

Therefore I assumed we were just eating the bandwidth up. But after upgrading the quality did not change at all... In fact, at times it was worse - even useless....

Yes, you are correct, I have the VT1005 plugged directly into my cable modem. My modem is also a 4 port router, and I have forwarded ports: 5061, 10050~10061, and 50000~50100 to the Vonage box (as I have picked up from research that many of these ports are needed).

There is nothing between the Vonage and the modem, nor is there anything behind the Vonage.

I broke down and called Pakistan (Vonage tech support) today, shortly after posting this thread. They did as I suspected (as I had read many other posts where they did the same thing here) and turned my bandwidth saver down to 30.

The woman on the line informed me that with the Motorola VT1005, this is what it was designed for and that's what it should stay at. I don't know how true that is, but in her defense, it's been working good this evening.

I made sure she made notes on my account of all the seting changes she made, so that if I had to call back, we wouldn't go thru the same things.

We'll see how it goes for the next couple days and I'll let you know.

In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be willing to try them out in the event this fix doesn't actually fix the problem.

Thanks again for the reply!

[edit]

Sorry, I submitted without answering all of your questions...

We have both cordless and corded phones - the issue is not dependant on the phone type.... When one doesnt work, none of them work....

I do have a neighbor who has broadband, and would be willing to try the device at his house, but it's not like I can make it screw up on demand. It may be fine for 15 minutes, then BAM - its unusable...

Maybe one day when I got a bunch of calls to make for work I'll carry it over to his place and give it a shot Smile

Do your kids use peer-to-peer file sharing programs such as limewire among others or online gaming? P2P file sharing programs and online gaming can cause the type of issues you're experiencing while trying to use your phone. If these type of programs are constantly running in the background and even though you have ample bandwidth, if your Vonage adapter is not given the highest priority you will have issues as you are currently experiencing...This very well could explain your low QoS score.

Are you familiar with the Hawking HBB1? To sum it up, it's a network optimizer that basically manages your networks bandwidth while giving priority to the most time sensitive application when needed providing for a more efficient usage of your network's bandwidth.

No, I know the damage P2P does to Vonage - I've stopped many a bittorrent download to help my wife be able to hear better on the phone....

That's not at all the case anymore...

I'll check out your link, but I'm not one to throw hardware at a problem...

Smile Thanks for the reply!

The low Quality of Service numberis probally the place to start looking. Check to see if your router has something called Stateful Packet Inspection or Denial of Service settings in the firewall section. Some routers think Voip is something that should be blocked. If you see those in there, make sure that they are turned off.

I have read reports in other forums of third party Voip being un-usable on Comcast while Comcast's own Voip service works perfectly. They do throttle bittorrent so perhaps they are throttling Voip as well.

I have Vonage with Comcast at three different geographic locations and I am having no QoS issues or more importantly, no issues whatsoever.

phudgee: I also live in Chester (Ashton Creek Apartments to be exact) and I get service through Comcast also. I have no quality issues with Vonage. However, if I'm using a program like bittorrent and I'm downloading / uploading at my max speeds, my Vonage voice quality drops dramatically. As soon as I pause my torrents, my voice quality returns to normal.

The Hawking HBB1 will allow you to run your torrents and use your Vonage line at the same time without degrading your call quality.
