After inquiry, I was told that all of the ports below are open except Port 80 which is used by the ISP. It sounds a bit strange (I thought 80 had to be open for basic web browsing) but there it is.

thanks for the idea (BTW, the link is now http://alpha.vonage.com/vtalk - it looks like it has changed over time) and I think I have isolated the problem.
Vtalk+VPN works. Vtalk w/o VPN doesn't work.
It looks like the keys are with the ISP at this point. I will also research how to hook a linksys phone adaptor through a VPN on a computer (may need to have the computer as a router for the adapter).

Any body knows which VPN service should i subscribe to, and what should be the setup to use with the Linksys WRTP54G?
